This is ridiculous but I just signed up for a 10K on Father's Day but have not trained other than just a few fans here and there.

The farthest I have run is 8 miles at a very comfortable and I do lots of cross training and consider myself fit. Do you think it's a good idea or should I switch to a 5K on the day of the race?

8 miles is around 12.8 klm - so, depending on how long ago that run was , you should have at least the mental side of things sorted , as you have already run further than 10K in the past. However, although you may now be "fit" from gym work or other cross-training efforts, road running is high impact, does HURT and takes a while for our bones and muscles to get used to.

In other words - when did you last run and/or how much running have you been doing lately?? You have 3 months to go to Fathers Day - so if you start doing some running now, you would be OK for 10K by then, I think.

Father's Day is this coming Sunday June 15 th. My last long run was Saturday 8 miles and yesterday I did a 5K solo run. This evening, I'm taking a day off run to do some strength training at the gym. Mentally, I am ready but I get so intimidated when I see so many fit runners, lol

10 k is only six miles so you should be ok. You could always switch to 5 k on the day if you don't feel ready

Sounds like you'll be fine. Don't overdo your training this week, I'd suggest just one more (or maximum 2) "easy" runs. And it's not like you'll be aiming to break the world record on Father's Day. Just run at a pace that's good for you and try not to get carried away by everyone else around you, and try to enjoy it!

I'm in something of a similar position - aiming to do 10k (not as a race) by the end of June, furthest run 8k but not for a while. I am relying on the fact that I have been out running even if only for 30 minutes once a week, and doing other activities. I reckon runninghearbeirut's suggestions are well worth considering.

Yeah but rockette dalit has already run 8 miles. I don't underestimate 10 k mind you, it's nowt to be trifled with
