I would not give up my glucosamine and fish oils. I started taking them after visiting the doctor, explaining that I was having to forego family walks because of my knee pain. Doc said, "Come back when you can't walk". Which I was not impressed by. Within weeks the pain disappeared and I have been fine for the last five or so years. Started C25k in June, after putting off running for years because of worries about knees. I have had nothing more than aches, although I do knee strengthening exercises too.

A few years ago I had really painful finger joints ,especially one of my thumbs. The dentist I worked for suggested high strength glucosamine with chondroitin supplement .One of the patients there had such a painful knee problem he hadn't been able to play golf for a few months ,but after taking the supplement he was back on the course within a month or so.

I felt a definite improvement in my hands after about 4 weeks and by six weeks , no pain at all.

Not particularly cheap, but really worth a try,
