I have COPD and noticed last summer had water retention in my feet and ankles, didn't really think anything of it as it was hot. Anyway it's back again this year, seen GP who arranged heart failure blood test which was negative. The hotter it is the worse it gets, I've mentioned it again to GP but he doesn't seem that concerned. Anyone else suffer with this?

Water retention
Hi Jake, I used to randomly get swelling in my feet & ankles every year as the temperature and humidity began to rise. It would last about 2 weeks then go away. My GP was never as proactive as yours and I was always told, “it’s probably the weather!” One good thing is that you’ve been tested for heart failure and it’s negative. I’m now on a water tablets so I’ve had no marked swelling this year. I’m obviously not medically trained, but, I think I’d just keep an eye on it and if it keeps happening or bothers you, or if you experience any other symptoms, such as a different kind of breathlessness, then I’d contact your GP again.
Sorry I have no solutions just a shared experience 🙂
Lots of love
Lynne xx
Hi LynneThank you so much for your reply. I seem to be having it longer than 2 weeks, it's just worrying I've spoken to Dr twice now he said he would put me on water tablets but not whilst I'm taking naproxen for osteoarthritis. You can't win, it's one thing after another. I appreciate you replying.
Take care....... Jane x
Hi Jane, there always seems to be a catch with our conditions doesn’t there?! One possible solution will often compromise something else. I do feel for you. Has the doctor actually seen your oedema or is it just telephone consults? I think if you’re worried I’d contact them again. Even if only for peace of mind… xx
My physical therapist told me to flex my ankles and keep feet elevated. So, when I'm washing dishes, stirring a pot on the stove, lying in bed - I am flexing. Also, drink more water. If your body detects fluid is decreasing, it will store it in your ankles. Not sure if that last sentence is true, but it works for me! Good luck...
My husband has COPD and in the last few weeks his calves and his feet are very swollen. He also has Type 2 diabetes. My husband was on a water pill, but the doctor took him off of it. I don't really have any answers either for you Jake. My husband has a telephone consult with his doctor on Wednesday. It is not painful, but his calves are very tight.
Hi Jake. No where do you mention your blood pressure. Water retention directly affects blood pressure numbers, elevates them. Your heart & lungs work together to process & rid your body of excess fluid. Research this. Its your pulmonary system. Reduce your sodium intake. I advocate you follow doctor instructions but also bring him your questions. You have one you & you are your most important patient. Best to you. Anne 🌹
Hi AnnemThank you for your reply.
When I went to the surgery the doctor checked my BP said it was normal. My feet and ankles are not as bad now the weather has cooled down but there is still a little swelling as my shoes are tight. I'm walking daily but it doesn't make a difference. I will see the doctor again. 😷
My had the same thing. He has been taking water pills daily and wearing compression socks and it has definitely helped. The legs and feet aren't swollen any more.
