Ugh copd and now sleep apnea
Hi Brina423. Sorry to hear what you're dealing with there! My dad had COPD and sleep apnea as well. He had a CPAP machine and did just fine with it. It may take quite a bit of "getting used to"...
I'm sure there are a few people with first hand experience that can provide some real information for you...
Hi Brina
It isn’t uncommon for people with COPD, bronchiectasis etc to need a cpap or Bipap machine. I have bronchiectasis, scoliosis and severe osteoporosis, so I retain co2 and use a machine every night. It takes getting used to, I watch tv or read with it on so I am diverted, also maybe try it gradually for an hour or so in the day if you nap.
There are different types of masks , some cover mouth and nose, others just nose so you can find one that suits you.
The machine itself doesn’t make oxygen, but oxygen equipment can be connected to it and comes through the same tube. From what I understand the machine helps keep airways open and patent.
I have felt better using this, it is worth persevering if you can.
Any concerns maybe try and discuss with your pulmonologist or primary.
I understand it can be scary, but using the cpap should help.
Best wishes and hope you get some support.
Hey RedSox ! I apologize for the slow response. I have been traveling extensively for the past 2 weeks. My dad used the CPAP machine every night for 8 or 9 years. I will have to ask my mom as to whether he continued to use it when his COPD had progressed to the point where he was using his O2 at 6 liters per minute at rest. I'll get back to you on that part...
My dad passed away in March of 2016, but really had 10 great years despite his VERY severe COPD.
