Find it frightening that we have it so much younger or is it that we noticed symptoms earlier and diagnosed earlier ?

in reply to Vonnie50

Mine picked up when I had severe breathing difficulties and was hospitalised December last. I think coz I had asthma first had that not happened woukd not have known. Honestly don't know...I find it all still scary...my group well nearly didn't go back as last week everyone seem to be gasping for breath

Vonnie50 in reply to

I only found out as working at vets at time my breathing was getting harder after a few hours and vet thought I was allergic to the parrots. Dr had given me a Copd test which they said I passed and was fine ( obviously that was wrong) ct scan at Royal Brompton showed emphysema had given up smoking years earlier and was vaping instead. Gave that up straight away but still use nicotine gum costly stuff. Don’t give up group we need to give it a try both of us x

The physio therapist invited me back..as I was on a low after proper diagnosis, they have really looked after me to be fair. Doesn't change what we have, but I can say our respiratory nurses hca physio are second to non. Although it's a packed group

Quitting was the hardest thing for me to do. I tried 6 times before I was finally able to. So hlad I stuck with it.

I was diagnosed copd/emphysema about five years ago. I was using the ellipta inhalers and watching spots in chest on cat scans. I turned 50 quit smoking and started walking and going to gym. Just had my year exam and spots on lungs are minimal and I was taken off all inhalers except emergency one. He said my pft test results improved 39 percent and I am feeling great.

in reply to Vicky68

Wow how are you in yourself

joyful4u profile image
joyful4u in reply to Vicky68

Good for you Vicky. It's encouraging hearing good reports, especially when you put the effort in to improve your health.

in reply to Vicky68

What do you mean spots sorry

Vicky68 profile image
Vicky68 in reply to

I am feeling great and can feel a big difference in my breathing. He was watching these dark spots that showed up in my ct scans. I’m not sure what they are but he did tell me if they got bigger he would have to test further

in reply to Vicky68

Oh I see did you not ask and glad you feel great

I totally agree with this

Hi Emily, thinking back, I was diagnosed

with copd in 2016 but was told that it showed up as mild in 2014 but I wasn't told about it. So actually it's 5 years & it's still mild. I panicked at 1st but with time, I realized that the best decision for me was to go forward, 1 day at a time & make the changes that would keep my healthy. I had quit smoking at least 25 yrs ago, which I'm so glad of. I started walking daily, drinking a lot of water & making healthy food choices. Some things are out of our control but I made my mind up to control the things I could. It freed me up from a lot of " what ifs".

I pray that God gives you peace as you go forward. 🙏🙏

in reply to joyful4u

All in God's control I am still praying

in reply to joyful4u

Praying gives me peace for a while

in reply to joyful4u

Another thing that confuses is people getting it years after no smoking but stable at mild..pray you stay that way

I suspect there are a lot of people with mild and even moderate COPD and don’t know it because their symptoms are not bad enough to be investigated, and may stay at that level indefinitely.

in reply to jackdup

Do you know if any

jackdup profile image
jackdup in reply to

If they don’t know they COPD because they have never been diagnosed because the symptoms aren’t bad enough then I wouldn’t know either. I read some time ago they believe about half of the people that have COPD don’t know they have COPD.

in reply to jackdup

No I meant if you are stable or know of anyone diagnosed who are none progressive

jackdup profile image
jackdup in reply to

Hypercat I believe has been stable for quite sometime and if you read this post they have actually improved. I have read a few posts here where people’s FEV1% of predicted has improved and others you have remained stable. You have to keep in mind even people with healthy lungs see their lung function decline as they age, so from that standpoint yes it does progress, but if it doesn’t progress any faster than someone with healthy lungs then your FEV1% of predicted remains the same.

in reply to jackdup

I think there is a difference with bronchitis and emphysima looking more on the emphysima line..

jackdup profile image
jackdup in reply to

I think the majority of people here have emphysema but you would have to ask the particular people. I realize there are many other lung diseases represented here as well, but it seems emphysema is pretty common. I think many have both and while emphysema may be the primary diagnosis I think many also have chronic bronchitis as well. Again it also comes down to your definition. If your lung function declines at the same pace as someone without lung disease or with healthy lungs do you consider that progressing or just aging?

in reply to jackdup

Thanks I am like redsox and like to keep the difference..Have you got emphysema I can't remember...this has been quite informative for me...it's actually dispelled some of the fears I had ...not all some

jackdup profile image
jackdup in reply to

I could be wrong but think they started using the umbrella term COPD as often people had both emphysema and chronic bronchitis, or the didn’t necessarily know for sure. I don’t think I have ever been told, but just assumed it is emphysema. Always just been told I have COPD, and I think the treatment for both is the same.

It is probably good that we have a bit of fear as hopefully it will keep us from starting to smoke again and hopefully keep us doing the right things like exercising.

in reply to jackdup

No mine is definitely emphysima had single breath diffusion test . You had yours years I believe..and there is a distinct difference

jackdup profile image
jackdup in reply to

You could very well be right. I assume mine is emphysema but don’t think I was ever told that definitively.

in reply to jackdup

You should find out how long have you had copd

jackdup profile image
jackdup in reply to

I was first diagnosed in 2005 but am sure I had it before then as it is not like a virus where it can happen overnight. Much like a heart attack, it generally takes a long time before you get to where you have a heart attack, but to find out when the blockages in the arteries originally started would be impossible I suspect.

in reply to jackdup

What stage are you how have you progressed

in reply to jackdup

With emphysima that is

joyful4u profile image
joyful4u in reply to jackdup

I can see how that can happen. They start treating according to the sympthoms.

jackdup profile image
jackdup in reply to joyful4u

Yes indeed. I suspect smokers will often have more difficulties breathing even if the don’t have COPD so people may not be diagnosed until it gets to the point it is worse than what you would normally see even for a smoker. By then you may be moderate.

in reply to jackdup

I am the moderate one I think we can conclude it does progress...she is a very nice person to try to dispel.my fears though

joyful4u profile image
joyful4u in reply to

That's what happened to me Emily. Good thing is I didn't have to take meds that were not needful at the time. The doctor knew I hadn't smoked in so long & that's what could affect the progression of the emphysema. Terri

in reply to joyful4u

Do you think so...I am mikd/moderate so already progressed just not sure about me getting no worse...but

Mimibx3 profile image
Mimibx3 in reply to jackdup

I agree...sure I had it for quite sometime before diagnosis’s my biggest symptom was my oxygen saturation levels drop quickly and during normal doc check ups it wouldn’t go above 88 without lots of deep breaths.

Still looking to hear from people I think my nurse may have a point but not sure time alone will tell

I was told approx 5 yes ago that I had mild Copd , she did say very mild. Anyway I am now 73 and walk about 2miles with the dog everyday, eat well, mostly healthy stuff . I still am breathless on an incline or up steps and have a nasty cough but overall my nurse says my test shows improvement, hardly anything there at all. I find using a preventer inhaler everyday helps and keep pushing yourself, I walk fast up a hill or go up a few fights of steps everyday, sometimes feel as if I can’t do it but I am hoping it keeps my lungs expanded and not too stiff. Good luck

joyful4u profile image
joyful4u in reply to Fruitcake100

Hi, I totally agree with you. After quitting smoking happens, the best thing we can do for ourselves is to walk, drink a lot of water & eat healthy. I find that exercising helps keep the mind focused on what's best for us & what we can do to advance.

It helps me to feel proactive in doing my part. Terri.
