Opening airways and coughing up mucus.

Many folks write about coughing at night and trying to bring up mucus. Many also ask about NAC and will it help. I take 1200 mg of NAC before bed and I suck on sugarless menthol cough drops. I am Gold 4, on O2 24/7 and I take Trelegy as my primary COPD med. I sleep very well and cough very little during the day. Here are some Professional notes about NAC.

6. NAC (N-Acetylcysteine)

Yes, it’s a mouthful but N-Acetylcysteine, otherwise known as NAC is an antioxidant that has shown promise in some studies. In a study of 24 Israeli COPD patients, it was found that 1,200mg of N-acetylcysteine a day helped lung inflation, especially after exercise. It is known to reduce phlegm, cough, thin mucus and ease expectoration. Although it won’t prevent flare-ups, its ability to loosen sputum is significant, and it can be bought over-the-counter. It’s a great example of natural treatments for COPD.

I found that Clear Lungs by Ridgecrest....is also a good alternative. I just bought the extra strength. It seems to help me. I will update as I keep taking it for a while. I also take NAC.

NAC is available on prescription but I think it is only to be used once a day. Someone posted this on the BLF group. healthunlocked.com/blf/post...

NAC is NOT the same medicine as NACSYS as used in the UK and some other EU countries. Here in America, studies have found that 1200 mg per day is the best dose for COPD. I take mine before I go to bed at night.

RedSox: I wondered about THAT myself. It just happened and then it back to regular.

Many people take NAC with COPD in either one dose 600mg ( so most of the sputum is coughed up before bed)at the start of the day or two doses the second at tea time. It’s natural to bring some sputum up as soon as you immediately lay down.

I find the menthol , or any cough drops make my breathing/ throat worse and funnily enough sucking a rennie works better for me! Hope you get some respite soon . Different things for different people I guess. Cx

I take 2 600 mg NAC every day. Don't know if it's doing any good but so far it's not doing anything bad.
