Looking for at home exercise program

Hello, I am new here, 64 years old, a smoker ( down to 10 a day) and was diagnosed with COPD about 3 years ago. I have been fortunate to not have any flares until recently. I am interested in some form of exercise program that I can do at home to improve my breathing. I especially have trouble with bending. Thanks in advance for any info you can share.

  • I bought a cardio stationary bike it the one you can sit and ride or you can stand and ride as u r riding in either position it keeps you posted on your readings it's great

  • Just start out slow maybe about 10 min at at a time a couple time a day mine is in front of tv help to make it easier it works and I walk I'm on oxygen 24 / 7 but I don't let it hold me back and on top of my meds I take AIRBOURNE doctor says tats great it builds up you immune system I love it and it makes me feel better you have a great day

  • I was looking into Airbourne and found quite a few different types. What type do you take?

  • I do an hour every day, 3 x 20 minute stints& play word games on my I pad

  • I used chantix to quit..works like a charm..been a few years now..good luck btw I think tai chi is a good form of exercise

  • I tried Chantix too but it made me very anxious so I had to stop.

  • @JMWW, hello, the first thing you can do to improve your breathing is to quit smoking, but you already know that. I have aerobic walking CD's, these are pretty good exercises, can do them at home, with or without oxygen. Five days a week I do 1 hour of walking with the CD's, that is equivalent to 4 miles. I also have weights I use while watching tv, use bike peddler, do push ups off counter, blow up balloons. Anything you do that is moving Is a good thing. The CD's you can buy most anywhere and are not expensive. Good luck and God Bless.

  • Quitting smoking is the only thing that is going slow the progression of copd, exercise won't if you continue to smoke.

  • Hello Sandra1944, there is no reason you can't wear oxygen and exercise at the same time 😊 You should find out about Pulmonary Rehabilitation from your Dr or nurse (not sure how it works there, I live in the U.S.) There are exercise videos on YouTube for people with copd, too. Just type in copd exercises in the search bar.

  • To qiut smoking was sooooo hard. Ii used that niccateen gum...i am sure i mis-spelled that. That fear if i didn't is how i quit.

  • I've been on nicotine gum for about 14 years, diagnosed with copd about 2 & 1/2 years ago, addicted to the gum now :( I had flu a couple of years ago & never chewed the gum for about a week as I was to ill, coughing & sleeping most of the time....great I thought, the nicotine will be out my body, I won't want any gum...Wrong lol, not worried about it though. Advice on exercise

  • Welcome to the site, JMWW Exercise is the best thing you can do. Don't think you need the lectures about smoking. Do you know what stage you are? How active are you? The exercise you do, would have alot to do with how bad your copd is. Rubyxx 😊

  • Thanks for your response. I am not sure what stage I am at, this only the second time that I have had this much discomfort. I am pretty inactive which I know contributes to the poor breathing, so I am trying to do a little more every day and have seen some improvement.
