Ileostomy problems

Hi everyone,

Just wanted to introduce myself and hope that I’m ok to be here to chat and listen to all things ostomy!! I hope that this finds you all well(ish) and happy 😀🙏 I’ve had my Ileostomy now for 16 yrs give or take 2 yrs when I had a reversal with a J-pouch formed. Unfortunately, after 18 months it failed and had to have a second Ileostomy form. Which was actually a relief. It was supposed to be temporary but I’ve never wanted to get rid of my bag as I couldn’t go through the hell that I did back then. I’ve had this one for 12 yrs now. I have the usual adhesion problems, irritation and burning around my stoma and also ‘the leaks’ aarrgghh! Some foods cause me problems but I work around that mainly. As soon as a partial blockage starts I drink lots of water/juice, lay down on my side, gently massage the area or have a hot bath! Mainly the hot bath is enough to move things along! Does anyone else have similar problems and if so how do you deal with them? I’m always on the lookout for advice and tips and new friends 🥰

Hi,

Glad to hear you're doing well with the bag after the complications of the j-pouch. When you have partial blockages, do you find a particular juice works? For me i find peppermint is really good at breaking things down.

May i ask if you current stoma is permanent?

Hi there,

Any non fizzy juice that’s not fibrous helps flush things through.

I have a loop Ileostomy that’s supposed to be temp but I’ll not be going back to get it reversed. So I would class it as permanent now.

What foods do you find cause partial blockages? I hope you are feeling a little better now. Have you spoken to your stoma nurses about your problems as they could help re diet and possibly a different bag to help with the leaks. Take care
