Severe Diverticuitis
You can certainly ask! Be prepared though; it's up to the doctors and insurance companies to decide if it's something that should or can be done. I have Crohn's Disease and suffered for years. I asked several GI doctors and was told surgery wouldn't work, no surgeon would do it, etc. I went to my primary care physician for an annual exam, and she could see how sick and discouraged I was. She said "why don't they just take your colon out?" I explained I had asked that repeatedly and what the response was. She asked if I minded if she called my GI doctor herself. I said not at all. Within a few days, I had an appointment with my GI doctor. He wanted to do another colonoscopy. When he couldn't even get the scope in, he finally sent me to a surgeon.
As far as making it permanent, you may find the doctors push for a reversal. I was originally diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis and scheduled for a J Pouch; but a biopsy on my colon showed Crohn's Disease, so they recommended I keep the stoma permanently at that point. But I've read that other people with different issues have been pushed to have reversals.
Life is so much better for me now. Don't get discouraged; keep pushing for what you feel is in your best interests.
i have had a few colonoscopys, but they cant get right in, my doctor has said its worse than it was 3years ago, so im going to push for perm stoma, as its my body, im the one that has suffered for years, sorry no more,
I had diverticular disease for years and all that goes with it even abbcesses and narrowing of the the intestines. I suffered severe constipation I mean serious constipation. Finally I landed in hospital again and had an haemorage the bleeding could not be stopped and I had an emergency op ileostomy about five months ago I was dangerously ill and foolish to let myself get so ill. The surgeon advises me to not attempt a reversal at least not this year as I am not well enough, he did say that recovery could be long and drawn out and gave the impression it might be better not to have it done atall. I don't like the stoma and its problems but my fear is what if after the reversal the same sort of things develop again.
i had severe diverticulitis too. suffered for 5 years, got cut and connect, nbut too early to say it has worked, i found the pain afterwards.very severe, just breathing in and out, was very sore, it has eased off now, not sure what the next stage is, if it hasnt worked, may have to get my bowl removed, not sure.
