Hi. This has happen ed to me but it’s believed to be related to a recent change in my blood pressure medicine. The situation is being closely monitored.
Hi Prawn I'm not sure why just know sodium and potassium have to be in balance. Are they even with low sodium?
Many people reduce salt intake because doctors falsely blame salt for high blood pressure. Do you consume enough salt? I drink mineral water with electrolytes (salt, magnesium, potassium) all day long. Plus I salt plenty. But my BP is low and I never took BP meds.
I was talking about this with a nurse the other day, could be your lifestyle, what you eat, and maybe medication could cause low sodium levels.
I was hospilized for low sodium early in my treatment with Acalabrutinib. The hospital drs took me of of both blood pressure medicine and antidepressant. At the time I was not eating well, and was given lots of advice by nephrologist. She was very concerned that I eat more protein. Made lots of recommendations. Protein powder, Fa!rlife a high protein milk, protein drinks, electrolyte water etc. Since my numbers have all gone down I am back to my normal eating, and no sodium problems. Never needed to go back on blood pressure meds.
I should note when I saw my regular hematologist he was upset that they took me off meds. Said I should stop drinking so much water. Strange since I had been advised to drink lots of water.
hi all thank you all for your thoughts
She is 84yrs and her potassium is fine as are all her other bloods just a low sodium dropped 5mmols in 1 month
All her medication has been checked and is not of concern
And she has too much salt on her food for the whole of her life
I have contacted her haematologist for input as 2 Gp’s and a pharmacist do not know why!
I've been on a diuretic (Triamterene-HCTZ) to control hypertension for years and my sodium has been low for years. One of my new doctors noticed the low sodium and cut my diuretic, saying, "You're dry, you're flushing your salt out."
Now I have normal sodium level, and my BP is elevated. Working with a cardiologist to solve that problem.
Hello Prawn77
In my case I suspect as I age, I uranite more and flush the salt from my body. This follows my increased water intake from doing chemo.
Too much liquid intake can cause hyponatremia. My husband had it and had to be hospitalized for it. The brain swelling caused alzheimers like symptoms with 2 word sentences, for example "no talk". Very alarming but reversible to normal.
I had a low reading once too. I drink 3 litres of water a day. I cut down on my water intake day of test and it was back in normal range. I actually add quite a bit of himalyan salt to my food and was very surprised at that particular result.
