retinal bleed and Covid vaccination

skipro profile image
16 Replies

good morning to all of you amazing members.

I’m debating on getting my ninth Covid booster.

Last fall I had a retinal bleed that occurred during a three week interval between eye examinations.

There was quite the debate as to what caused the bleed

I read an article from the NIH that discussed retinal vein occlusion associated with Covid vaccine and that this could have caused my bleed??????

So now I’m debating about getting another Covid vaccine but have concerns about having another retinal bleed

Has anyone else experienced a retinal bleed after a Covid vaccine.

Thanks I appreciate all of your input

Apparently a number of different types of vaccines carry a small risk. It's not just Covid/mRNA ones. There doesn't seem to be a difference between the risk of this side effect between the different major vaccines routinely recommended.

A retrospective study showed that while it appears the risk between dose 1and 2 does go up, the risk of Covid causing this side effect is greater. Similar to how there is a risk of myocarditis from vaccination, with the risk of myocarditis from Covid infection being higher.

You personally having had this happen, may make you consider not having another. Apparently you are possibly one of the people sensitive to this side effect.

I would suggest you get monitored intensely for *any* vaccination you choose to get, moving forward. This rare side effect can happen with many types of vaccines.

Thank you for the great info

Thank you Sofia, you obviously speak from a wealth of knowledge.

Your explanations are spot on, to the point and helpful🙂.

Your reply happens to echo how I feel about the covid vaccination; yes, there is always a 'risk' of sorts. However, I believe that the risk of catching covid and its aftermath, the long covid, greatly outweighs the risk of any after effects of the vaccination, which may or may not occur.

Personally I would opt for a non-adjuvanted vaccine if there is one; what is your take on this?

Hmm this is a tough one, and I think is more of an "individual" response per person type of thing. Because overall, we immune deficient folk probably need the "extra stimulation" of certain adjuvants to be able to make antibodies. Ever since aluminum salts, when added to a vaccine, were discovered to stimulate more antibody production in guinea pigs, researchers have searched for other compounds.

But this "broad generalization" needs to be individualized. For example, aluminum salts are the oldest in use, and it has been learned that at least some people with kidney disease should avoid ingesting aluminum. So no aluminum cookware, no aluminum containing shots.

Some people can tell they are sensitive to things. In this post, Skipro mentioned he happened to get a condition that has rarely been linked to vaccines in general, and IMO should exercise caution in what vaccines to take, and how often. More extensive monitoring, and no delay seeing a doctor if "something" seems to be going on, should occur. Someone who catches "everything" that goes around maybe should consider taking the risk, others may not. But in CLL patients, who really need any T cell response they can get, factors in to this decision. Especially if we are under treatment. People with autoimmune conditions are ones who may be at a higher risk for more severe reactions in general.

It's heartbreaking to be or know someone who happens to have had one of the severe reactions. I wouldn't be happy if I was one of them. But before we vaccinated, there were many more instances of disease in large groups of people. Vaccines decrease morbidity & mortality, and without them many more people would have died of various diseases.

You can see this effect as diseases than had been virtually eradicated making a comeback. In the US, polio has once again arisen, and measles is on the rise.

My CLL specialist in Tampa did not recommend the vaccine at all. Instead I had Evulsheld. That is no longer effective but there is something new out there Instead. I'm traveling or I would give you the name. Stay safe and well!

Thank you

My docs here aren’t sure if they will recommend this new MAB so I might have to go elsewhere

Given you've had 8, you're having issues that may or may not be vaccine related, my inclination would be suggest, that's probably enough.

I agree with the caveat...for now.

I think your immune system is telling you it would like a break, so take one. Then, look at taking the vax in the future, maybe when a certain circulating COVID strain looks more serious - aka, when the risk/reward is more balanced in your favor and you have let your body settle down.

I had an intense reaction after the Moderna vaccine in 2020. My eyelids swelled with water like blisters on the lids. My eyes felt like they were on fire. The swelling would go down and reappear. I dealt with this for nearly a month.I saw my GP, oncologist, ophthalmologist, dermatologist and ER doctors. Not much worked except ice packs and time. It’s the only time I have ever had a reaction to a vaccine. I came down with Covid around Thanksgiving last year and I’ll take Covid over the vaccine reaction. Good luck. Sally

I’ve heard others say that the vac was worse than the disease

I guess everyone is different

I wonder how severe your Covid infection would have been without any T cell stimulation you already had on board from previous vaccination. It's difficult to say "oh the disease was worse" when you have no way of knowing how bad it might have been had you not gotten vaccinated. Especially knowing people who have died from Covid infection. Sorry to hear you had a reaction from the vaccine; no one wants to be in that group, it's awful.

Sofia

I’m a scientist and a physician but have become exhausted trying to sort through all the data.

I start feeling brave then I hear of someone in this group get severely ill or pass away from Covid. Or I hear of someone with a normal immune system, at least from what I can tell, that passed away. Or I catch a a non-COVID bug that lasts a month or more not being totally sure how much of my symptoms are the Ven v infection.

Ugh

I can’t find much data of late but my friend an ER doc tells That up until a month ago there were a lot of Influenza, Covid and RSV admissions but there has been a huge drop in cases

So worn out thinking about it

skipro. I did have a BRAO a year ago. It was found by a retinologist in regular checkup, but that was a month before my next Covid shot. It also followed a history of one pre-cll treatment retina problem. In my case, I think it has to do with me, so no help on the Covid question. I did want to check, however. Best. Bill
