mmr vaccine in grandson

evening everyone.

just seeking some advice. My dad has cll, diagnosed in 2018 and still on watch and wait. My dad is my little boys best pal. My little boy has his one year vaccines this week, including the mmr which he then has to avoid my dad because it’s a live vaccine.

I hate to keep them apart but how do people cope living in the same household as immune compromised individuals. I will of course keep him away as my dad is my world and would hate for my son to pass anything. I just wondered how long I should keep them apart for too. Many thanks :) Abby

Abby, I would contact your dad's specialist. I am 43 and have three small kids so I had to be around my children when they had the jabs. There are some live vaccines that you should avoid your loved ones/close contacts to have when you are at higher risk (e.g. going through treatment) - the flu nasal spray children get is one of them (your kids can have the injection if you don't want to limit the contact with your dad and you want your kids to have the flu jab). My immunologist reassured me that even when I was on treatment, I was perfectly safe being around my son when he had the MMR jab, the MMR jab "doesn't shed" as some of the other jabs do. The doctor had their head of department to check for me. I would say it is very unlikely for your dad to get sick as a result of being around your child but I do not know your dad's specific situation. Give them a call so you feel reassured.

HiI am 60, diagnosed stage 4 in Nov 2020 when my kids were 3 and 18 month's. Obviously I went straight to transfusion and O+I. I was in uMRD with 250 days. I am on daily Acalabeutinib and monthly bloods plus regular IVIG top ups during the winter. I am retired and a full time dad to my , now , 6 and 4 Yr olds as my wife travels a lot for work. My kids have all their vaccination Inc Covid when they can. Had no issues with MMR and the flu vaccine we just get GP to give the non live version. Only vaccine we have stopped was Kennel Cough for our dogs. On top of that I live a full pre CLL/Covid live style, the kids and wife bring Covid home multiple times, so we have plenty of paracetamol in the house and I keep pack of Paxloid in a cupboard just in case paracetamol don't work. Keep save.

We've wrestled with that with two children in our home and a CLL diagnosis in the midst of the COVID years. The rules we've settled on are pretty simple.

Everyone is aware that I'm immunocompromised and need to be careful about germs. "If you're feeling sick, it's important to let Dad know." My wife and kids voluntarily self-isolate when ill and let me know right away.

My wife maintains her COVID-19 vaccinations. We have not vaccinated our kids since their initial dosage regimen, as their risk of contracting or transmitting COVID-19 is quite low.

We do not ask our kids to mask. I certainly don't want them thinking they "got Dad sick" if the worst case happens. There would be significant social isolation for them with masking. I don't feel asking those things is a fair trade for what would be a marginal increase in my safety. My protection is on me, not them.

My wife tends to use common sense and avoid or mask up with large crowds.

I wear N95 indoors and manage my indoor exposure, avoiding public transportation and crowded venues/times. Outdoors, I generally don't worry about it.

I can't speak to the incubation period for infant live vaccines. There might be some available research on that, but my gut would be to keep them apart for a few days and then figure the benefits of companionship were worth any small increase in risk at that point. No grandson for a week is not the end of the world.

Keep in mind that even in peak COVID, the odds of COVID transmission if someone in your immediate household had it were only around 15%.
