CLL and Hip Replacement Surgery

I have CLL 17p deletion. Been on Ibrutinib since February 2019 and have done great! I had hip replacement surgery before I was diagnosed with CLL and now find myself facing replacement for the other hip. Anyone had this type surgery while on Ibrutinib? I know there will be protocols to come off the meds etc. but I am just a little more concerned about chance of infection, being slower to heal, etc. now that I have CLL. Any of you fellow CLL patients had similar surgeries ??

I was on ibrutinib when I had my hip replaced 2 years ago. I paused the drug for 1 week before and for a while afterward (a few weeks maybe?). It seems to me that I was off it for a few weeks after surgery because I was on a blood thinner. Anyway - my lymph nodes did not swell up and my blood numbers remained within normal ranges. It all went well and I love my new hip!

I was able to secure a private room for my 3 nights in hospital - I was concerned about COVID-19, etc. At that time, hospital staff in my area were still masking so the situation was a bit different than now. I have nothing to compare it with since I have only one hip done, but I don’t think that the CLL or ibrutinib caused any problems. Hope all goes smoothly for you!

Thank you for the encouragement! It was definitely worth having the hip replaced and I don’t dread the surgery as much as I did the first time. Just having CLL gave me cause for concern I guess. Thanks so much.

Emgeegee - I have not had any surgery other than a tooth extraction, & I stopped ibrutinib several days before & after the surgery. No problems. I have been on ibrutinib along with a blood thinner, Coumadin, for 9 years without any problems. I recently changed CLL specialists & I am now on a drug holiday. My doctor thinks I will go 3 years or more before I need treatment again.

Best wishes to 210Savannah with your upcoming hip surgery.

Lynn

Hi, Savannah! I have 17p deletion, and TP 53 deletion as well as several other unfavorable markers which put me in a high risk category. I recently had a hip replacement for which I stopped Acalabrutinib for 5 days before and 5 days after. My orthopedist put me on a blood thinner for a month after surgery during which time I restarted the full dose of Acal again. No problems at all, not even more bruising. I am very happy to be able to walk again without pain! Hope your surgery goes well with no complications…..I do think physical therapy after surgery was very helpful.

so glad you did well! I agree that the physical therapy is key to a full recovery!

My hip was done pre CLL/SLL - but I recently had 2 oral surgeries (tooth extracted with a bone graft - ready for dental implant surgery next year!) and I was concerned about the healing time as well. I seemed to heal just fine. I am also not suffering frequent infections on a regular basis with my CLL/SLL so I know we are all different that way. Best of luck to you!

Had my hip done in June 2022, had been on Ibrutinib since August 2017. Stopped the drug 5 days before surgery and went back on 5 days afterwards. No increase in nodes or numbers.
