zero neutraphils

My mum was rushed in to hospital on fri. Her neutraphils are very low and not responding to antibiotics. So likely not an infection and perhaps caused by ibrutinib.

She has been on ibrutinib for 3 years.

The blood shows they have not changed. She has been advised to contact her team urgently to find out what is going on.

Do they come up eventually and should I be worried. ? Any advice I would be so grateful.

Hi mouseygirl,

-

The condition is called neutropenia and it happens for some of us on any of the treatments, and for others that need treatment.

Here is a list of the 395 past postings that mention it:

Unfortunately, neutropenia is common and can be a result of the disease or from the treatment of the disease. I think what your mother’s team is saying is that since she has low neutrophils she is very vulnerable to infection. As a result, they want to see her to address the condition/vulnerability. This can be managed with injections that will stimulate neutrophil production. She needs to be cognizant of infection risk until she sees her team but it doesn’t necessarily mean she has an infection, although I am confused by why she was rushed to the hospital.

I hope this helps.

Best,

Mark

Hi Mark,

Thanks so much for your reply. They gave her the injection last night and they have since come up. She will meet with her team on Tuesday, but currently they think this could be viral as she'd very recently had the shingles vaccine? The hospital dash was the result of an increased heart rate of 203..... Very scary! Thanks again for the info and taking the time to reply .
