Bruising

Hello everyone. Just wondering if anyone who is on Calquence - Acalabrutinib, has had lots of bruises appear? It does say it is one of side affects. I dont mind the odd bruise but have had 2 very big ones appear on my legs, the latest which has quite a solid lump under it and that is what is giving me concern. Bruises just on legs. No other problems at all.

I have bruising on my arms and legs with another BTK inhibitor, but no lumps underneath. Mine appear if I bump against something or scratch myself. Some appear seemingly for no reason.

Thanks for your reply, must be symptom of the treatment! At least I know now I am not in my own.

Yes, that sounds like normal bruising and the legs are a favorite spot and I generally had that hard bump in the center…not always. The bruises on my arms and hand are a come and go thing but they do take a while to disappear totally and then more will appear. I even had small blood blisters appear in my mouth, generally the cheek lining or roof of the mouth. They came and went very fast but I had them more on then off for the first 7 months and now no more…gone!

MERRY CHRISTMAS! 🎄🎅🏻🤶🏻🎄

Thank you Panz. I take it the hard jump disappears eventually too. My bruises just seem to appear without me actually bumping into anything. Thankfully they are at top of leg so not seen. Now that I know someone else has the hard lump I am not so worried.

You'd be surprised at how easily the bruises can form sometimes. Brushing against a doorframe and sitting in the car can leave bruises from things merely touching my arms & legs. Did your thumbs press against your legs when pulling on pants or socks? Did you brush against your leg with a bag of groceries, or a briefcase? Stuff as innocuous as that might bruise!

Yes it would seem that way as I certainly havent bumped into anything. Just seem to appear and this is 2nd that is size of my palm!!

Yes I have however no lumps underneath. Less with Alacabrutinib than I had with Ibrutinb.

Thank you, hadnt thought about certain food acting as blood thinner.

I take back what I said regarding swiss chard. It acts as a blood clotter not a thinner. I had it backward. I am sorry for the misinformation.

country76 , the doctors always gave my cousin vit. K when we were growing up to help stop his spontaneous nose bleeds .and it seemed to work well .... where did you get the info that vit .K was a known blood thinner ???

Do I have this backwards?? My apologies if I do.

We grow swiss chard in our garden and it takes a lot of swiss chard to make a batch. I have noticed more bruising when I eat the swiss chard. I have stopped eating it.

Hi country76 .. after reading your reply i thought i would check out the swiss chard info . i blend in raw spinach with my smoothy's but was not familiar with the chard " looks like they all are about the same .... maybe you just bruise yourself more harvesting the chard .... .. i thought the research was interesting about the fact that it is all considered brain food ... 😜. ----- .".Leafy green vegetables, such as kale, spinach, Swiss chard, and collard greens, are a central component of brain healthy cooking. In fact, in a study of more than 950 older adults in Chicago, people who ate just one to two servings of leafy greens per day had the cognitive ability of a person 11 years younger than those who ate none.

That said, certain medications or medical conditions may change the way that your body responds to these brain healthy ingredients. If you’re taking any medications (especially blood thinning drugs like Warfarin, commonly sold as Coumadin or Jantoven), it’s important to talk with your doctor to determine an appropriate amount of green vegetables for you.

Vitamin K Helps Blood Clot (Thickens Blood)

Most healthy adults should aim for 90-120 mcg of Vitamin K per day, an essential nutrient which, among other roles, helps your body form blood clotting proteins. Blood thinning drugs (like Coumadin) work to reduce your body’s ability to form blood clotting proteins from vitamin K, thus reducing the risk of blood clots. This means that eating foods rich in vitamin K (primarily found in leafy green vegetables) can interact with blood thinning drugs, making them less effective. Therefore, it’s important to talk with your doctor to make sure that your dosage is appropriate for your diet.

To get an idea of how much vitamin K is in certain foods, as well as the foods you might want to discuss with your doctor, see these guidelines from the National Institutes of Health." --- thanks for getting me started on some side research since the calquence took my platelets down to 19 ;....... i better add more of these green leafy veggies to my diet . --- blessings , james

Swiss chard is easily grown. The recipe we use is saute several chopped cloves of garlic with a little Olive Oil and then add a huge bunch of Swiss chard. It shrinks down considerably, then I add organic fresh squeezed lemon juice and zest of lemon.

The other dish is to steam the Swiss chard and add balsamic vinegar.

Thanks for catching my error.

Enjoy

I have been on Acalabrutinib for 16 months. My consultant always asks if I have any bruising or bleeding. I notice that if I bump myself, then I bruise more easily, but I haven't noticed any large bruises. I did bump my thigh on a table corner and noticed a lump in the centre. Just keep a note of when they appear and if you have bumped yourself. I keep Arnica gel in the cupboard, it relieves the pain of bruises. Take care

Thank you. I did wonder if it was ok to use Arnica so will try that. I havent got pain, my main concern was the lump under it but it seems to be par for the course.

I’ve been on Acalabrutnib for 18 months and I’ve had lots of bruising on my lower limbs. Less now than at first so I’m hoping that trend continues

Yes, easy bruising is a very prominent, though the platelet number stayed the same.

Yes, I bruise easily too. Find them all the time and don't remember where I got them.

I have bruises all over my arms from the Calquence. Plus, any little scratch and I bleed like crazy!

Me too. Part of the medication. Have had the lump up in centre of bruise too. Bruising on legs and arms, been on Acala for three months, bruising has diminished a lot, so hopefully they will in your case as well. Nice that you don’t have any other side effects. Happy Holidats.

Thanks, yes just seems to affect legs and arms. Thankfully only small on arm. Hopefully as you say might ease of in a few weeks.

Hi Westie 11, I started calquence last month, and initially had several massive bruises on my legs, one more like a raised, painful haematoma. Luckily they have gone down, and I'm wearing two pairs of thick leggings plus some leg warmers to protect my legs. I also wear half chaps when I'm dealing with my horses, and haven't had any since.

Might try extra layers too. Thanks.

Oh yes. As others have said, mostly on my legs, but they have also appeared on my arms and chest. They also seem to take a long time to disappear. Best wishes

While I was on Imbruvica, I had bruising, blood blsiters in mouth and brittle nails. Now on Venclexta, no side effects and my nails grow like crazy.

I developed bruising after 2 doses of Calquence. It was called a hematoma and discontinued right away.
