Sauna. Cognitive functions

Hi!! Does anyone know if the sauna is good for CLL, bad or neutral?

Also, has anyone seen their cognitive functions altered in any way? memory, confusion, intrusive thinking since diagnostic ? Thx. D.

I would imagine easy person may present a different situation. I have been told to avoid swimming pools hot tubs and saunas.

I don’t have an immune system of my own. I also avoid air plains.

I would simply ask your doctor what he/she thinks.

I think the sauna is most likely to be neutral, at least in my case. I have been to the sauna in my gym many times since diagnosis in 2008. After COVID pandemic started I stopped going to the gym for 2 year and only went back less frequently a few months ago. I now insist on not being with others in the sauna and keep a 2m distance from others when working out

I all my years of going to the gym with a sauna and having CLL my WBC and Lymph counts rose very slowly for a time ad then remained stable. After 14 years I'm still on W and W and hopefully not near treatment

CLL and ageing.....Which is to blame for deteriorating cognitive functions? Could be either....Maybe both.....

I used to blame everything on CLL, until I looked in the mirror and realised....... I'm not a young buck any more.

I now have a few fairground mirrors that give me an even more distorted view of myself......some make me look slimmer.....I like those ones....

In my case syntoms of memory began at the same time that CLL.

Dr. Rhonda Patrick has studied saunas and the activation of heat shock proteins, there is some early/interesting information coming out on saunas and aging, brain and heart, with regards to CLL, I have wondered, but don't know, might be a double edged sword?

I certainly saw a decline . My complex thinking skills have declined especially when tired. I’m also more forgetful

So now I take more notes, and write things down when the thinking requires many data points . I let the people around me know when I’m foggy as it helps the social situation.

At the time of my diagnosis, the symptoms that sent me to the doc were extreme fatigue (I couldn't finish a workday), pain (it seems I am one of the unlucky that when the CLL is active in my marrow, I can feel it) and inability to concentrate (I started making mistakes at work, of a frequency and pattern that was noticably different that my norm).

Regarding the sauna, I love far infrared. I also love steam rooms. But since Covid, I too wait until empty of others before using public ones.

True, I am thinking more of the exterior handles being contaminated in a public sauna or gym. And if the room was crowded, and they happened to cough or sneeze on you, there's a tiny possibility of getting infected through those brief seconds. Whereas, if there's no one else but you, it can't possibly happen. My risk avoidance is really extreme haha. I even avoid driving during busy times, others are so distracted, I'll wait if I can to drive when the roads aren't crowded.

My (German) doctor absolutely encouraged the sauna! Obviously you should be COVID-cautious these days, but saunas are generally hot enough that bacteria doesn't hang around. I sauna 1-2x per week (though in COVID times I rent a private one) and the effect on my mental health outweighs any potential risk (though incidentally, I went frequently to the communal sauna from diagnosis in 2017 to late 2019 and never got sick from it).

For me, the sauna is the best for mental clarity, concentration. Etc. Much worse since CLL, but as our friend said, maybe it's a two-sided sword! I have been using the sauna for 20 years for chronic anxiety... the question is could continuous sauna wake up the cll?

Yes, I have noticed these symptoms and how some medical staff abused my decline, even suggested I be transferred to a psychiatric department. That was the last straw. Have become more recluse, taught myself to read and write, walk again, visual impairment does reappear however no longer daily. Cognitive decline was reduced to the equivalent of a 6-year-old, I'm 63. I came across meditations by Joe Dispenza and these help immensely.
