Hematologic disorders and the Sun, Saunas, Spa's

Hi all,

Does anyone know if you are more at risk of Skin Cancer for all Hematologic disorders including CLL or is it just CLL ?

Living in Australia and near the beach, I will now be subject to regular skin doctor reviews. I was told to wear a full body wet-suit when I go in the water.

What about Saunas ? are they a no go also ? Stimulate the white blood cells ?

We have natural spring spa's not far from Melbourne. I gather the risk of infection is too high for group spa's ?

I am trying to find the balance between not wrapping myself in cotton wool and living within my means

Don't even think about taking coffee away from me ha-ha

Any help appreciated. Your community has excellent information.

take care good people

I live in Florida & I am exposed to the sun all the time. I have a boat & enjoy beach/pool. I see dermatologist twice a year. I have had 2 mohs procedures in my 66 years of life. CLL 15 years- 3 years in remission post chemo. We can be more susceptible or more sensitive to skin issues however my non CLL friends & family have way more skin issues than me. Use sunscreen & see how you do. Everyone is different. I have gone in the past to spas & shared huge hot tubs & pools. Not now during virus. I am not into saunas.

I don't drink coffee so I never understood that whole situation... 🤣

Enjoy !

Believe me I would love to join the coffee club. Coffee makes me sick. Since 25 years old I have stayed away from it. Tried it again at 35. No luck. Its not the caffeine...love soda etc. I used to drag in the mornings when I worked. I am a night owl. Fortunately I retired early so I don't fight mornings anymore. 🙂

At CLL Live 2015 in Niagara Falls, Canada I recall a presentation by Erin Streu RN on the results of a Canadian Clinical Study of skin cancer in CLL patients vs. other NHL patients. youtu.be/1aqe9voPNWg?list=P...

I vaguely recall that study found that CLL patients were 3X more likely to get skin cancer than patients with Folicular Lymphoma. Other studies showed that patients with NHLs were 2.5X more likely to get skin cancer (my numbers may be off slightly due to old brain cells). The net was that CLL patients are 5X or more likely to have skin cancers vs. normal population. Her presentation is worth viewing via the link above.
