Well folks I had a fun day yesterday ... not! Whilst washing the kitchen floor yesterday morning I somehow fell with a kettle full of boiling water. I scalded my leg really badly, my husband called an ambulance which came after 40 minutes. I was blue lighted to our nearest A&E which is 20 miles away. It was thought I may have to be transferred to a specialist burns unit but when the doctors had seen my leg it was not thought necessary. My leg was dressed and I was discharged to be in the care of the practice nurse.
However, they did an ECG and it seems that my heart is a bit irregular. I haven't had heart problems before but wonder if it is possible that there's a link to my Acalabrutinib. I have been prescribed blood thinners and beta blockers which I would rather not have unless they are essential. I am going to try and get an appointment with my GP. I have emailed my CNS and will try and contact my consultant today.
I slept very well and my leg doesn't hurt really, it more the little burns on my hand and arm which are sore.

So easily done, and I find the floor more unforgiving and definitely harder as I get older! The burns sound painful - I hope you managed to get some sleep and soon heal, and that your irregular heart beat settles down again.
Oh gosh how awful!! The fall is bad enough but the scald-ouch!! I got distracted filling a hot water bottle years ago and it went all over my hand, so painful!Peggy
Oh Alice, what have you done, did you ask if irregular heart beat was due to your accident? Are they having any follow up with cardiologist as to why you now need beta blockers and blood thinners? as you know I have had to stop acalabrutinib twice with heart problems, but I’m now back on them and ok, I’m also on beta blockers and an anti platelet, hopefully they can sort you out soon. Dave x
Thanks Dave, I feel sure that it was the accident and they didn't suggest anything else. Just gave me a prescription. Trying without success so far to get through to GP. Have messaged my consultant as well. Fingers crossed 🤞 stay safe x
Sorry to hear that and I always panic trying to remember what to do !
Assume you had all those little pads stuck to you ? Mine always shows something irregular so you want to have an Echocardiogram. I had one last year and was told my blockage was nothing to worry about. Agreed you don’t want to take meds unless you have to.
Thanks Colette, trying without success so far to get through to GP. Are you the Colette on the SUAG group? Apologies if not but if you are, it's good to put a face to names xx
Thanks Colette, I am apparently being referred for an Echocardigram. I still think it was down to shock. I have messaged both my consultant and my CNS and left a message on the consultant secretaries telephone answering machine. I sort knew that I needed cold water but was in deep shock. All I could say was ' trousers off, trousers off'. I did then soak a towel with cold water and put that on my leg and then the ambulance service said to get in a cool shower. I have to dressing changed today, soo scared, it will have stuck 😫 This difficulty in contacting my medical team will possibly be where we will benefit from the App eventually.
Alice you have far more faith in the app than I do. Sorry to be cynical but haematology staff are usually only interested in bloods and some related areas like skin cancer.
My echocardiogram found I had a left branch blockage, but don’t worry it’s common and lots of people have it and that’s what showed up in my unusual ECG’s
Had dressing changed but the surgery doesn't carry burns dressings 😡 why am not surprised? The nurse made me an appointment for Thursday and she sent a prescription to a chemist we don't normally use and across town. We got to chemist and they hadn't received the prescription. Rang GP's and it had apparently gone to our usual chemist by mistake they said. After another ten minutes it was picked up on something called 'the spine' which allows prescriptions to be up by any chemist.
Oh ouch, that sounds really painful! 😖 It must have been one of those days yesterday because I dropped a full pan of penne pasta in scalding hot water and narrowly missed both myself and my son who was standing just to the side of it! 😱Just a few splashes that were easily dealt with. However, my wood floor hasn’t faired so well and now has a noticeable pan mark and pasta shaped scorches stretching across the floor.
Glad you were able to get help and didn’t need the specialist burn unit. I experienced severe tachycardia on Ibrutinib and now need beta blockers. Let’s hope it’s just stress related as a result of the accident and can be easily resolved.
OH MY GOSH !! What a day huh? And 40 minutes for ambulance 🚑 is that normal for where you are? So glad your leg burns were such you could be released and I hope the pain doesn’t get worse. Keep us informed on your heart and burn updates. 🧜♀️💪🏼 🍀🫶🏻
Thanks for your reply. I just accepted the delay in the ambulance because I knew it would probably be out on another call. Our local A&E has closed and so we have to travel to either York, Hull or Scarborough all of which are considerable distances. Our local hospital is 5 minutes away. A very sore point with the residents of Bridlington because we seem forgotten, a huge hospital site and virtually closed. Bridlington is a tourist town where our population doubles in the summer plus the normal make up is mainly elderly and young families.
Ambulance services are in dire straits presently in the U.K. mainly caused by the difficulty in ‘off-loading’ patients at A&E due to their own pressures.
‘The average ambulance response time for category 2 calls (which includes suspected heart attacks and strokes) is 40 minutes in England – more than double the 18-minute target.’
It’s shockingly bad at the moment I’m afraid ☹️ Recently I had a friend who waited 4 hrs 20 mins after falling and suffering a serious fracture to her hip which left her in excruciating pain and unable to move. It’s a national disgrace so I’m not surprised by the wait Alice had.
I know it's no consolation to you, but the problem is the perfect storm. Ambulance response times are extended because so many ambulances are waiting to off-load their patients at A&E so are not "clearing" ready for another job. The ambulances can't hand over their patients because A&E is full to bursting. A&E is bursting because they can't shift patients into the "ordinary" wards of the hospital such as orthopaedics, coronary care, MAU or whatever because they are full and cannot take any more patients. The hospital departments are full because they have patients, lots of whom are old or infirm, who they could discharge and should discharge but there is no-where to discharge them to because the social care and support system is basically busted, so they remain, filling beds which they no longer need. It is like filling a bath; if you keep the taps on filling it up, but don't pull out the plug, the bath eventually overflows and floods the bathroom.
Oh kitchengardener2!!!! I hope you feel better & heal quickly.
Blood thinners are a must to avoid stroke from any blood clot. Beta blockers, depending on which, may make you tired. Keep your doctor posted so they can regulate type & dosage to suit your needs. Rate & rhythym are important to modify as to not stress the heart structure itself.
I have an excellent electrophysioligist since I have pvcs & afib. He explained our hearts are like "homes" w/structure, electricity & plumbing...sounds funny as I type it but the analogy helped me understand my condition.
My husband once "saved" his motorcycle from falling after forgetting to put his kickstand down. Unfortunately, he had shorts on. The burns from the hot pipes were terrible. I can't remember the cream they gave him but it helped him so much. I hope you are ok & sending virtual hugs for you!!!
I am so very sorry to hear of your fall and subsequent scalding. Falls are bad, but burns are just plain nasty. I will pray for a speedy and full recovery, Kitchengardener2. I had altered and bad heart rhythms (excessive PVCs) which we traced directly to the Imbruvica. I went off Imbruvica for three weeks and the heart situation disappeared. But my blood work began to go bad again. So they switched me to Calquence, and that controls the CLL with a lower heart impact. However, a cardio-oncologist consulted with my oncologist who suggested as a caution that I start taking a 50 MG dose of Metropolol, a heart medication to lower the PVCs. I hope this is of some help to you. Take good care. Michael
I also was put on 50 mg. Of Metoprolol for my irregular heartbeat. I did have an episode of AFib when I was on my VIPOR trial for my relapsed DLBCL Non Hodgkin’s lymphoma. The VIPOR trial consisted of Venetoclax, Ibrutinib, prednisone, Obintuzimab, and Revmilid ( Lenolidimide). The docs think it was the high dose of prednisone that caused my heart to beat irregularly and very fast ( tachycardia)/ AFib. I was at my oncologist office getting my blood draw on a Friday when it happened. The nurse called him and he came running. He is so nice, knew I was scared and joked to me “are you trying to ruin my Friday?” I said, of course! Made me feel better…..EKG started and showed AFib. Taken to ER via stretcher…( husband called as he was waiting n car due to COVID so he met me in the hallway bein g rushed to ER…Taken to ER and cardio/ AED room and had a chemical (IV) cardio version, thankfully converted back to normal sinus rhythm without having to use AED shocks…Admitted for two days, trial paused then for two days then back on trial and no problems with anymore AFib when put on Metoprolol. Finished trial (am presently in a 23 month CR) and cardiologist had me wear a Zio heart monitor two different times and both showed no more AFIb. He did adjust my B/P medicine, though..Best wishes to you for your burns to HEAL. And for your heart rhythm to recover. It is no fun on some of these medications for sure. And shock from a burn is horrible. I really liked the Metoprolol as I took it in the evening and it really relaxed me.
I am waiting for my consultant to call me before I take anything. I still think (hope) that it was the shock of the accident which caused my heart rhythm to be our of sync. Thanks for your good wishes
Update!! What a performance with dressings. The surgery don't keep them and had another patch up job. Prescription was then sent to pharmacy for dressings etc because you have to take your own. Only thing was it went to a different pharmacy to the one we had been told so that caused a delay. However, got them now. I was given an appointment for today to have dressings changed (48 hour change needed). Yesterday lunchtime, doorbell rang .... district nurse there, she queried if I was Alice? Yes said I, she said it had been decided to change dressings every day but her notes said I had a scalded HEAD. Anyway she changed them, I now have to go to wound clinic at local hospital every weekday and nurse will come here at weekends. I have got further information now about the heart rhythm problem after my CNS spoke to my consultant. I have to have another ECG this morning and then start taking the medication. Still not really happy but if consultant is ok, I have to have faith. Will report back.
