To any of you dealing with mouth sores I had them in the very beginning. My oncologist sent me to an ENT and he gave me a script for magic mouthwash to use several times a day and then spit out and he gave me lozenges one tablet five times daily and I’m going to spell it out here CLOTRIMAZOLE 10 mg TROCHE. These two things worked for me I haven’t had sores in three years at least good luck to all you hope this helps

Hi Lizshanti,-

It's great to hear a positive solution to one of the side effects that many CLL patients encounter.

-

These may occur due to our immune compromised condtions allowing bacteria, virus or fungus to infect us anywhere on our body, but mucosal membranes (mouth, sinus, lungs, genitals) are especially susceptible. (these pictures are not pretty) webmd.com/oral-health/ss/sl...

The CLOTRIMAZOLE 10 mg TROCHE is a treatment for mucous membrane fungus.

Other causes for mouth sores can be viral, like HHV-1 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herpe...

Thanks for sharing your success.

Most toothpastes contain sodium lauryl sulphate. It's what makes the toothpaste frothy and can be an irritant. Corsodyl and Sensodyne are SLS free. Changing toothpaste has not stopped me getting mouth sores but they are much less painful. At their worst I could barely eat.

Yes the sores can be quite painful. The magic mouthwash helped me after a few days. I only use it when the sore is really hurting. Otherwise, warm salt water rinses and dental gel help. They usually go away after about a week or less.

The mouthwash with peroxide (Colgate) has helped me quite a bit too.

The "magic mouthwash" is by prescription only but glad the Colgate one works for you.

I had the magic mouthwash a year or two ago but then was called by my dentist office to dispose of it because it had been recalled. I'm sure that was just certain lot #s or something but good to know I can seek this out again through my Dr also. 😊

Oregano oil worked great for me. 1 drop on my tooth brush for about a week. I had mouth sores with Imbruvica sometimes.

Be well,

Hi Liz, thank you for the information. I am having problems with mouth sore since I started Imbruvica 9 months ago. . I am using the magic mouth wash and helped me but now my tongue is red and looks like a fungus, so I think I need something better. Do I need a prescription for Clotrimazole- Troche? I live in USA, Thanks

ThanksI am also having regular tongue cuts.

But when I avoid sweets it decreases.

I am managing with mouth washes.

I will also check with ENT and try your mentioned mouth wash

The last bout of mouth sores I had, I also was prescribed Magic Mouthwash. Regrettably, I had an allergic reaction to it. Consequently, I switched to simply rinsing my mouth out several times a day with warm salt water which worked perfectly fine. I should note that my episodes with mouth sores began when I first started taking Ibrutinib. Since then I've been taking Valcycovir daily.

I was recommended Ora-Nurse by dental department. It is an unflavoured toothpaste and only available on Amazon - around £8 for 3 tubes which last about 6 months. I was finding all normal toothpastes including Colgate and Sensodyne very painful to use.My problem is ulcers due to lichenoid inflammation related to immunosuppression. I've been prescribed betamethasone (steroid) mouthwash but leads to thrush - which then requires fluconazole to resolve it.

I've now managed several weeks with just the Ora -nurse and no mouthwash. Thoroughly recommend trying it.

PS I failed to mention that I've had no ulcers since stopping ordinary toothpaste and am managing without mouthwash too. They may well come back in the future but for now I'm enjoying the remission

I have to be careful what toothpaste I use too - plus certain foods, flavorings and additives such as sweeteners have an effect. What a learning curve this disease is!

Hi I've found that before sleeping, wetting a finger and dipping it in Bi-Carbonate of Soda powder then applying this directly on the mouth ulcer works brilliantly
