CLL and high covid vaccine failure rates.

Hi all, I just saw an article on the news stating that patients with CLL have a high covid vaccine failure rate. It stated that we simply don’t make or stop making the antibodies. They are in clinical trials with a monoclonal covid antibody infusion in which they are having good results. I fell out of remission last May and went on venclexta and rituxin. Unfortunately, despite being careful, I got covid pneumonia in December and was hospitalized for a few weeks. I’m now fully vaccinated. I left a message with my hematologist to see if I can get an antibody antigen test to confirm if I actually have the antibodies.

I'm just wondering something after reading your post - if we get the covid-19 vaccine plus make sure to get a pneumonia vaccine, would that prevent the complication of pneumonia from getting ill with corona virus?

I found an answer in this article prnewswire.com/news-release... "While the recently authorized COVID-19 vaccines remain the most important strategy for preventing COVID-19, investigators found that older adults who received pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13), which prevents acquisition of certain pneumococcal strains, experienced 35% lower risk of COVID-19 diagnosis than adults who did not receive the vaccine. In contrast, an alternative pneumococcal vaccine (PPSV23), which prevents severe pneumococcal disease but does not block acquisition of the bacterium, was not associated with protection."

Good question with a well highlighted answer. Yet a further reason to be up to date with pneumonia vaccinations, particularly given the improved protection given by the more recent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13): healthunlocked.com/cllsuppo...

Good reminder, we need both as per your link - TWO Pneumonia vaccines – first Prevnar 13 (PCV 13), then at least 2 months later – Pneumovax 23 (PPV 23 - also known as PPSV23).

Interesting question regarding pneumonia vaccination. In the middle of a plethora of letters related to Covid from my GP etc I have a request to call them to book a pneumonia jab.

Probably just a coincidence.

best to all, rob

I've read other people in this group who ended up catching C19 had antibodies. But did not receive the vaccine. It appears unfortunately getting the virus is a more effective way to get the antibodies.
