Tea now ?

I almost never drink tea. I drink warm water. But would any tea ( or combination/blend) be of any benefit now to A. increase general immunity, B. counter effects of virus infections in general, C. to support system defense in case of a virus infection, D. to sooth throat irritated for any reason ?

I would say that the most important benefits of drinking tea would be to help maintain hydration and to ease any respiratory infection symptoms, such as a sore throat.

The evidence cited in support of tea consumption for health conditions is generally positive but not that strong and can be influenced by the social aspects of sharing a cuppa. That aspect is probably even more important right now!

With respect to the health benefits from compounds in different teas, you don't get much of a dose unless you drink a huge amount of the tea, plus they have to survive very hot water. In general, compounds in teas that are claimed to boost our immunity rely on animal studies or at best in vitro studies. Where there is evidence of an immune boosting effect, it almost invariably involves boosting cell division of B-lymphocytes. Perhaps that might be temporarily an advantage when ill, but longer term you'd be more likely to see your CLL tumour burden increase more rapidly if the effect really does happen in vivo.

There's a huge range of teas you can investigate to see if they are more enjoyable than just hot water. Enjoy the journey of discovery and hopefully you'll find some favourites that will improve the pleasure of a warm drink, possibly with the bonus of some slight health benefits. Never overlook the power of the placebo.

Believe it or not: Since decades I only drink warm water and nothing else. It works for me and I come for an individualistic background without much of what "all others do". Thank you for your insight !

I find that it helps me stay hydrated; I drink decaf PG tips, I have never really enjoyed fruit teas. The only reason drinking tea helps me keep hydrated is that I always have a large mug on the go. I have no if health benefits of other teas. But drinking something you enjoy can only be positive.

We have fallen in love with Yogi brand Lemon Ginger tea which has wonderful taste and claims to support healthy digestion. An additional feature is that each paper tag attached to the string has a life affirming quote printed on it.

Love that tea also.

Benefits of drinking herbal concoctions masquerading as tea are doubtful, as are most of the flavours IMO.

I quite like a good quality green tea, and home made tea with root ginger. I also enjoy a decent Darjeeling, but generally do go easy on caffeine, sugars and sweeteners. I don't drink tea bag tea from choice.

Cheers!

Yes, one has to be careful about the effects of some teas and beverages in general!

Hi! 🤗 vog292, I drink coffee & Tea, but Certain teas mainly the organic herbal teas can be helpful, Vitamin C based teas , Orange, Lemon, Berries have antioxidant properties, but just read the labels first for the most effective ones that may help your immune system. I personally take an immune booster by Arbonne products I find it helps me🤗. It is an all natural grape /berry drink. I am not advertising Arbonne but just letting you know what I take. It tastes like grape juice🍇. Wishing you the best of Health in these uncertain times🙋‍♀️, Debbie.

Any mention of immune boosting immediately gets my attention, because for over a decade now, when I search out how that might happen, it almost invariably is because of evidence that the claimed responsible ingredient(s) have been found to boost lymphocyte production. That's the very thing we want to avoid with CLL, as CLL cells are cancerous B-lymphocytes.

You haven't stated which Arbonne product you are using, but if it is the Antioxidant & Immunity Booster #6298, the primary ingredients are vitamin C, which is known to stimulate B-lymphocyte production and brewers yeast (saccharomyces cerevisiae), which has also been found to boost B-lymphocyte production in mice and chickens respectively.

From

pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/212... (HKY is heat killed brewers yeast).

"The results show that HKY promoted spleen cell and lymph node cell proliferation from HKY-vaccinated mice..."

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articl...

"...lymphocyte maturation, differentiation, and proliferation, such as IL-1R, IL-2, and IL-15 were significantly upregulated in the treated group by 28 days of age."

I couldn't find any human studies, but that's not unusual for supplements, where flimsy scientific evidence is often provided to justify taking them. Irrespective, if the primary ingredients work in humans as indicated by animal studies, taking this product or similar would be unwise in my opinion when you have CLL, unless perhaps for a short period when ill.

Hi! Neil , I was trying to be careful of what I said, it seems to boost my energy in that respect. It's a shame Vitamin C used to be good for us 😢, before our diagnosis. You sure know about the efficacy of different products lol:). Before I had CLL, I would take this product and would not get sick for a year!!! Thank you for your input🤗, Wishing you Good Health & A Smile 😊 in these uncertain times. Yours, Debbie.

Neil you are a (gold) mine of information. Thank you . You’ve just confirmed for me what I suspected . What are your views on Vit D ?which my consultant recommended I take . I personally hydrate with filtered water as Nature intended . Happy Easter . Emer

Vitamin D deficiency is common in CLL. In fact Mayo Clinic are currently running a clinical trial to see if supplementing helps. Your consultant's recommendation makes perfect sense.

I eat blueberries, cherries and apple every day mixed with walnuts, almonds, peanut, dark cacao, cinnamon. ( Because of dental care ignorance in my youth, I now avoid chewing with my teeth and eat only paste.) All ground into a soft chocolate type paste with the food processor. Alternating during the day, alternatin g with a paste from broccoli, spinach, green beans, garbanzo beans, canned wild salmon, olive oil, organic mushroom. (All is from organic frozen or canned no salt.) It probably contributes right now to a perfect CMP and almost perfert CBC (after 18 cycles of Imbruvica). Also walking on my treadmill one hour per day, plus going up the stairs to the 16th floor: The muscles increase absorption of medication and certain flavonoids etc. and support oxygenation and circulation.

The effect of the right music on aging: Search for the video CANA BRAVA RESERVA MERENGUE: It should show 4 Dominican singers who have been active since the 1940's: The smaller one on the right was 93 and the others over 85. The last concert of Joseito Mateo was at 96: Video JOSEITO MATEO CONCIERTO . He died last year at 98.
