No comfort from Insurance Cos while suffering from Cancer

It’s 3 years since I was diagnosed with CLL stage 0 and got another set back yesterday

Turned down for LTC policy

While I did not ask for this cancer yet I feel like a second class citizen

I understand there is risk to the insurance company and underwriters but during times of suffering one of the best remedies is to feel that I will have the same opportunities for care down the road.

my wife and i have 4 year ltc policies purchased 15 years ago from what was then GE and now genworth. Most of the LTC companies that existed then have either gone out of business or sold off their portfolios to other companies. What happened was the 2008 crash. Most of these companies then were making money because long term government bonds were around 8 percent . they figured their rates and profitability based on the 8 percent. then the crash and treasury bonds crashed to 0 and the government held rates down to help the economy after the crash. they are still only about 2 percent. they are mostly losing money on all their old business. they made my wife jump hoops then because she had had a 'heart incident'. They are now very risk adverse.

My wife has very bad rheumatoid arthritis and is SOL on this also

Given the abuse that the insurance companies heaped on folks who purchased LTC policies, you may have dodged a bullet.

You don’t need it. Just do a reverse mortgage on your house when the time comes.

Those creepy insurance companies will always make profit off the backs of the little people.

Was in the mortgage business in my former life. Please be careful with reverse mortgages. There are good ones, but many bad companies as well. And they are not for everyone. They are only good for about 35-40% of homeowners.

Other than travel insurance your pretty much screwed unless you had a policy before diagnosis.

Has anyone here tried to get life insurance after diagnosis? I tried and they said that I have to be in remissoin for two years before they will even consider me. I can imagine that if they do offer it then it will be very expensive. I have life insurance through my job now but will retire in a few years and would love to have a little then to take care of my wife.
