Influenza Vaccination Safety During Hospitalization

With some of us understandably concerned about the safety of flu vaccinations, this study of over a quarter of a million people vaccinated during a hospital stay in a period encompassing three flu seasons from 2011 to 2014 should be reassuring:

Note that while the study group involved 290,000 hospital stays, "In adjusted analysis, there was no increased risk of readmissions, outpatient visits, fever, and clinical evaluations for infection among those vaccinated during hospitalization compared with those who were never vaccinated or were vaccinated at other times."

In other vaccination related news, the governor of Washington State, USA has declared a state of emergency due to a measles outbreak. "Gov. Jay Inslee said in a statement that the outbreak in Clark County "creates an extreme public health risk" that could spread throughout the state. Under Inslee's declaration, state agencies can use all available resources to help affected areas and additional medical resources can be requested from other states."

Of the 31 cases, including one hospital stay, the Immunization status was

• Unverified: four cases

• Unimmunized: 27 cases

So don't forget to get your non-live vaccinations up to date and encourage others to vaccinate for their good health and yours.

Boy Neil, you find the greatest shots of animals! Are you just good at it, or are there so many exotic animals down in Australia that they are easy to come by?

I have a sister-in-law who is an anti-vaccination freak. She goes on and on as if there is some conspiracy to make us all ill. I think some people need to feel that the world is against them. Unfortunately, it's people like her that do not accept vaccinations and try to convince others not to as well.

I used to love the Kookaburra song, but always thought it was about a donkey! Neil is an animal whisperer in a land with an amazing variety of animals to choose from. Chris is the flower whisperer.

Measles again. So sad, and so unnecessary!

Unfortunately, they don't appear to appreciate that the reason that their children are able to (mostly safely) get by without vaccinations, is due to the protection (with a small risk) provided to them by the vast majority of the population that do support and have vaccinations. The stark contrast between community health pre and post public measles vaccination is dramatically highlighted by the Washington state governor calling a state of emergency over ~30 measles cases. In my childhood, a few primary school classes in just one school could easily account for that!
