I'm getting the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13) tomorrow. I have Cll stage 0, no symptoms. Just wondering if anyone knows how long a person needs to wait before you get the flu shot after getting Pneu vac? Should I wait for a few days or is it safe to get it right away?

Pneu-C-13 and Flu Shot timing?
I don't know what is recommended but I had the flu and pneumonia shots at the same time
You should ask your doc or practice nurse. They will give u both if safe!
You will be allowed to have there flu jab as long as you do not have a fever. So waiting a few days would seem to be a good idea. When I had my PCV13 it was a few days ahead of the flu jab but that was just the way things were arranged at the surgery. Your GP can advise whether or not there are good medical reasons to do them at the same time.
I had them both at the same session (within a few minutes). I hope that helps.
Here is a statement from the Immunization Action Coalition which partners with the CDC to disseminate vaccination information. I took the below statement from the IAC bulletin at the below address:
immunize.org/askexperts/exp...
Here is the IAC statement:
"The pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13) package insert says that in adults, antibody responses to Prevnar 13 (Pfizer) were diminished when given with inactivated influenza vaccine. Does this mean we should not give PCV13 and influenza vaccine at the same visit?
No. The available data have been interpreted that any changes in antibody response to either vaccines' components were clinically insignificant. If PCV13 and influenza vaccine are both indicated and recommended they should be administered at the same visit."
I believe a 2 week window between the flu vaccine and Prevnar 13 used to be recommended but based on the above it appears that recommendation has changed.
Hi I had them both at the same time.Best wishes
Thanks everyone for your help. Had to get my flu shot at a different place than my Pneu vac so just wanted to be informed before hand.
I had both st same time in same arm and got staph cellulitis. I wouldn't recommend it. Was on antibiotics for 10 days.
If you got staph (staphylococcal) cellulitis from a vaccination, that would most likely be due to poor hygiene practices from the person administering the injection, i.e. not cleaning your skin sufficiently beforehand, contaminating the needle or vaccine or contaminating the puncture wound afterwards. Cellulitis can certainly be dangerous, but at least antibiotics work against staphylococcal bacteria (well provided they aren't resistant..). Influenza, being viral is much harder to treat and pneumonia is a common cause of death when you have CLL.
'Infectious complications
The majority of infections in untreated CLL are bacterial, arising in the lower respiratory tract. Common organisms include S pneumonia, S aureus, H influenzae.'

Thanks Neil. I tried to remember back. I had the shots in my Dr. Office, I think the nurse used an alcohol wipe to clean the area, but can't remember for sure. The emergency room Dr. Thought it might have been because I got both shots in the same arm. Thankful the antibiotics worked quickly. I was diagnosed in October of 2013 and have been following the site daily. Lots of very helpful information. My thanks to all of you!!
The staphylococcal bacteria came from somewhere! Medicos do the injection so quickly and you don't think you are going to get an infection when you have them, so don't pay much attention - and face it, most of us would prefer not to watch ourselves being injected! Do mention to your doctor what happened next time you see him and politely stress how important hand washing and other hygiene processes are to immune compromised patients like you. Hopefully he'll use your experience to remind his staff to better observe these fundamental practices. The outcome could have been far worse...
