Flu shot and Acalabrutinib

I'm in the USA on Acalabrutinib since June 21 2019. I had the flu shot meant for 65+ last Friday and started feeling woozy after about 1 1/2 hours later, with a small 99+ temperature. I spent the weekend off and on in bed. I felt like I had been in a dog fight, dog winning. I also had nose bleeds down the back of my throat, essentially bloody clots. This Monday morning, no more nose bleeds but still slightly achy. I have never had a reaction like this to a flu shot. So I'm just alerting anyone on Acala that you might need to set some time aside after a flu shot if you get the more potent version for 65+ Hopefully you won't need that set aside time - then you can have fun fun fun with it :)

That is probably why my oncologist and GP said not to get the 65+ flu shot. They said it isn't much more effective and could have more side effects.

Thanx for update....hope you feel better.

I have not heard that. Interesting.

Here’s a recent thread on the subject:

Hi! I’ve been on Acalibruitnib since March, 2019 and I got my flu shot (NOT the 65+) and several hours after I had teeth chattering chills, fever that spiked to 103 and aches all over....fever subsided after taking Tylenol and than just felt like I had been run over by a Mac truck for a few days. I feel better now. I have had reactions in the past to the flu shot, although not every year so it’s hard to say if it’s the meds that we are on at that time of the flu shot or just the state of our immune systems at the time of the shot.

Wow - your reaction was significant, and that was to the under 65 shot! I'm glad you didn't have to do the 65+ I heard that this flu vaccine is supposed to be potent because of how severe the flu in Australia was. Australia's season reveals what we might expect for ours. I think I'll be doing a lot of staying in when flu season kicks off.

Been on Acalabrutinib since July, 2018. I'm under 65 but get the more potent 65+ shot. The only noticeable effect from the flu shot is a little bit of fatigue on the day after getting the shot (but hasn't stopped me from following my normal active routine).

That’s great news I can look forward to for next year’s shot.

Ditto on the acala treatment and 102 fever/chills a few hours after the 65+. My GP gave narry a word of warning. Now two days later, still washed-out and weak-kneed. Oh, well.......
