Hi... My son got kasai at 55 days last year. His bilirubin went down after 3 months but still all blood count like direct Bilirubin, SGOT, SGPT, GGT, ALP are not in normal range after 1 year. His stool colour is more or less like mud colour & sometimes light yellow or light green. Doctor says to wait as liver of child grows till 2 year so he doesn't comment much on stool colour. My son is still on antibiotics... For how long child with BA has to take antibiotics? . Does kids with BA never get normal stool colour. Please advise

Muddy color of Stool post 1 year of kasai
Hi Mgaud My son who is now going to be 7 years old this March got his kasai operation at 62 days old well i didn't need any continuous antibiotics but we did randomly when he needed e.g in fever and cough symptoms otherwise no. But he has his proper medication for liver and different vitamin dose regularly. As you asked for colour of poo so it is not always very dark like mud but yellowish shades some times a little bit darker. But he has itching problem!
Normally the colour of poo of infants with BA depends on what they eat.
👍😍😘
Thanks Blue2211, feels good to know that children with BA can lead normal life. I get depressed when i think future of my son. Till how long we have to give them liver medicine & vitamins. What will be routine diet... Can he eat everything. His stomach gets loose sometimes... Is it normal. My son also has itching problem. It gets worse during night. What can we do for itching. What will be his quality of life. All these questions gives me depression.
Hello Mgaud, it is good you are keeping an eye on your son's stool colour. It's important to let the doctor know as while stool colour can be affected by antibiotics it can also be affected by the liver so it's important he has regular bloods taken. When is his next appointment?
Thanks for your replyMy son got kasai 1 year back and he is continuously on antibiotics, vitamins, udcament since then. His blood tests are done every month and bilirubin, SGPT, SGOT, GGT, ALP keep on fluctuating......reducing very slowly but still not in normal range. Doctor says that antibiotics are given for one year to all after kasai. Major concern is his stool colour which is never normal yellow. It is sometimes pale yellow wih green strands, sometimes muddy colour, or chalky colour and sometimes off white with green strands. Is it matter of concern. I am very worried about his future growth.
Hi Mgaud,
My daughter had her Kasai Dec 14th2020 and she is still on IV and in hospital. Due to COVID-19 the hospita is locked down and we have 3 other children so can only see her when the nurse holds her. I have the same tpe of question. Her Bilirubin is 5.9 and GGT515 and has slowly come down but I am worried about the long term affect of the antibiotics on her body and the ability to fight future infection. Surely she can't be kept on them indefinately? When do you think the doctor will allow her home? Another question, sorry...what level of Bilirubin should we expect to get to when a person has had a successful Kasai operation? What bilirubin Level will not cause long term liver damage? We just want her back really as she was only born October 14th 2020; but understand hospital is the best place if she needs IV antibiotics.
