Hi mumanddad, Welcome to the forum! Firstly, have you all your cholesterol info at your fingertips? You need to get a breakdown of your figures. LDL , HDL and LIpid figures. If you are not sure what these are, Google them or look at some of the replies here in the forum and our wonderful subscribers will be more than happy to explain them all to you. LDL is the socalled " villain" and HDL the "goodie". The lower LDL and the higher HDL the better your GP will like it. The magical "4" figure is the one he will want to to attain. There are now very strong arguements against all of this, but this is something that you will come upon as you keep in touch with us.

Let's just concentrate on your diet. Are you a meat eater? If so, carry on doing so. Protein is a great aid to keeping you feeling full and not wanting to head to the biscuit tin! Eat more fish. Especially the "oily" ones, salmon, tuna, mackeral, herring, etc., and increase your intake of fruit and veg. (Avoid the friut smoothies and go easy on the juices, only one a day- say at breakfast - fruit sugars are heavy in these drinks and are not the best) Ease up on the carbs. That's less bread, pasta, rice and potatoes. Eat more pulses, (peas and beans). Don't worry too much about fat intake. All bodies need some kind of fat to keep healthy. Just enjoy your food, eat sensibly (you know how!) and keep in touch.

Oh, and PS 7.5 is not the end of the world. You are 0.8 higher than me and I have no intention of changing my diet, or going on statins. I am healthy, happy, have a good blood pressure, am the right weight for my height and have never felt better.

All the best.

I think patch already had a good diet, sip no change really needed. Just be aware of what different foods do. There aren't really and you can't eat at all - except grapefruit if you take statins.

Hi Patch14,

I have just joined this site as my Cholestrol is 7.1. However, like you I eat healthily, have excellent blood pressure and am the right weight for my height. My GP says it is up to me whether or not to take statins. I am still trying to decide what to do but would rather not take them if it is safe to be without them

I have a growth on my thyroid and am having a biopsy on it soon...Have been reading on here that thyroid problems can cause high cholesterol, I didn't know that, this is a very interesting site!

Cheers

MaryA

Hi MaryH - I think the best thing is to wait and see what comes of your thyroid problem. The fact that your cholesterol level is a little up is probably because your body is combating whatever is affecting your thyroid! As a statin sceptic I am not the one really to advise you but as you are obviously female there is a school of thought that statins do not help women as much as was once thought.

Good luck with the biopsy and keep us informed of how you go, best wishes

There is a statin that you can have if you are eating grapefruit. A friend of mine has gone on a special diet with grapefruit twice a day and she has changed her statin to compensate for the intake of grapefruit with her Dr's agreement. (He was the one who put her on the special diet anyway!)

Hi 2squirrels. Will contact my friend for you and get back to you with her reply. mumanddad, hello, you obviously take medication that needs you to avoid grapefruit. As I told 2squirrels, my friend has found a statin that is OK and I let you both know the name when my friend gets back to me. All the best
