Statins 'DON'T cause muscle pain': Major study reveals common side effect is caused by ageing — not the life-saving pills

An article in Mail on line:

I believe in this comment " People are usually told to make lifestyle changes in a bid to lower their cholesterol — such as improving diet and exercise habits, limiting alcohol consumption and stopping smoking — before being prescribed statins. "

I am not taking statins.

This conclusion is evident rubbish. I bet they will have biased the input as usual, maybe by excluding the most susceptible, but I don't have time to read it now.

The report is based on an analysis of other trials, so shares all the flaws we've complained about when the trials originally reported, but now there's 23 to check if you want to dispute it!

It's still basically Garbage In, Garbage Out. No new research here.

Im not buying it I have psoriatic arthritis and have tried 3 different statins and all 3 of them caused either excessive bleeding which made me anemic or added more pains to my muscle/ joint then I already suffered with.

Caused by ageing?? I was getting muscle pains from the start, and that was from the age of 18. Was moved to every Statin going and still had the same side effects up until my 40's when I gave up on Statins. Taking those tablets was the biggest mistake of my life.

Absolute rubbish! I've tried all Statins since my early thirties. I don't consider that to be old.I was even tested for Myopathy because of the muscle damage, actually caused by statins.

I am now trying a new Cholesterol lowering nedication - I'm in my seventies now, so have a long history of Cholesterol lowering medications & Cholesterol problems, so I think I'm qualified to give my opinion.

I was put on a low dose of atorvastatin and after a few days got aches and pains, after a few weeks i was in pain all over, especially legs, shooting pains in arms, within a few days of switching to rosuvastatin, all pain gone! statins do cause pain, not in everyone, but a lot of us! switching to different types, youll probably find one that suits you! however, can i just point out, its not just cholesterol thats a problem, statins help with inflammation in the body, which most cardiologists now say causes many of our health problems!

I went through all statins. Some worse than others but all were bad for me. Now I'm on Nustendi (bempedoic acid+ezetimibe) and seem OK with it so far, 3 months on.

glad you found something that works for you, but people should persevere with statins until they find one that suits them, i think combined with low fat eating, and exercise they really will help most people to have an extended life!

I know far more people hurt by statins than helped, but that may be because some are related to me. I had a decade of hell persevering with the rotten things, sometimes being browbeaten into continuing by suggestions I would die young like my dad.

Mediterranean eating and exercise are far more useful with far less harm.

As you can see from all the posts on this site, we all have great opinions!! we can only really go by what happens to us when we take statins, ive had an awful experience on Atorvastatin, but no problems on Rosuvastatin, ive also given up meat, am now 90 percent vegetarian, with fish twice a week and lots of lentils/chickpeas/brown rice/whole wheat spaghetti and Quorn products! The only downside is its bloody expensive to eat healthily, far cheaper to eat rubbish,I have lost loads of weight, blood pressure/blood sugar now perfect, and have taught myself to react to stress differently. I am looking to take up some exercise, possibly tai chi or beginners yoga, i figure the fitter and healthier you are, the more likely you are to survive a stroke/heart attack! Since the changes ive made to my lifestyle, with statins/low dose aspirin etc, I feel better, can only hope it lasts, I hope everyone on this site can find something that suits them and helps them find good health, especially ones like me now in early sixties.

Since i hit my sixties two years ago as well as health problems, i find myself fighting a losing battle trying to stop myself from turning into an old bag!!

trying to keep thinning hair and skin from making me look ancient doesnt help on top of health problems, we women have a lot to put up with as we get older!!

Thank you for all the response. Oxford university and British Hart foundation did the research, there is no mention of cholesterol numbers, what is important is NON HDL.

I tried statin because of my GP. I only took it for three weeks, GP wanted me to take it for three months. I went for cholesterol test at a local chemist, cost 10 pounds. My total cholesterol was 2.8, I stopped my statin now at 76 my blood test numbers are near average.

I do not want to go on any medication, only time will tell.

The underlying studies may mention it, but the secondary analysis reported here might not use it. This is only a meta analysis: we have literally heard it all before. It is not news.

Hello,I have always followed your response to posts. There have been many reports on statin medication. You may remember Heart UK members had a lot of discussions statin.

What is interesting here is Oxford University and BHF contributed to the study and report.

Oh yeah? What about all the other nasty side effects caused by statins?

I still suffer memory loss until today. No way a twentysomething should have that inflicted on them.

They certainly did cause muscle cramps for me, stopped statins and cramps no more. Other side effects like fatigue and stopped too
