Cholesterol blood test.

Could I have your help again please. After finding this website 2 months ago, i realized that statins can cause muscle damage and memory loss ( what my Mom has )

After talking to the doctor, i asked him if my Mom could stop Lipitor, she is still on Ezetrol, been on both for 30 years, and after six weeks have a blood test to check her cholesterol levels.

I stopped the Lipitor and started Mom on Ubiquinol 100 mg twice daily ( only found out about this from this website ).

So my question is this ? When Mom has a blood test done at the doctors, it is then sent to the hospital, do i ask the doctor for a print out of the blood results or does he have to request this from the hospital. Apart from LDL and HDL in a blood test is Triglycerides and Thyroid in there to, or do i have to specifically ask for these.

Also has the blood test got to be fasting.

Thank you in advance for enlightening my mind.

Londinium covers moat of it. Asking for C Reactive Protein is probably worthwhile. You can ask for Lp(a) but that's much more expensive.

I think fasting is more important for the glucose and Hba1c but some labs only do a full lipid profile including LDL if the sample is fasting... which means some GPs and lipid clinics mark all samples as fasting. I hope that ain't gonna cause problems later.

Triglycerides and HbA1C reflect sugar & carb intake.

HbA1C gives an overview of sugar & carb intake of last couple of months or so.

You have a right to view your blood test results - so ask for them.

The standard cholesterol panel includes triglycerides but does not include a thyroid test - you must ask your doctor to add that test to the requisition.

New cholesterol testing technology does not require fasting - however, in order to be consistent and to be able to compare cholesterol results over time, it is best to fast for 12 hours.

There is no evidence that statins help women who have not been diagnosed with heart disease. Statins can increase blood glucose levels and in some cases can lead to diabetes and various forms of dementia, not to mention muscle deterioration.

It is best to follow a heart-healthy diet and lifestyle to reduce or eliminate inflammation in the blood vessels and thus reduce the need for excess cholesterol production in the liver.

Your GP practice do a blood test request form, it states what blood tests are required and is fasting is necessary.

Fasting blood test is necessary for blood glucose.

For HbA1C fasting is not necessary as this tests gives data over 90 day period.

If the blood is collected at the GP practice, you can ask the nurse what blood tests has been requested. The collected blood is then sent to the local hospital for analysis. Count how many small bottles are filled with blood and ask the questions what tests re requested.

Blood test results are available in 10 to 14 days time, you can request a printed test result it may not be easy to understand the information therefore you need to go back to your doctor or nurse for full explanation.

Long term medication can give other health problems!

What is the dosage of Lipitor?

What side effect does your mum has not every one has side effect?

Depending up on your mum's age your doctor can do a risk analysis and offer full explanation.

So my question is this ?

When Mom has a blood test done at the doctors, it is then sent to the hospital, (YES.)

do i ask the doctor for a print out of the blood results (YES)

- or does he have to request this from the hospital (NO, results are sent back to the doctor electronically.

Apart from LDL and HDL in a blood test is Triglycerides and Thyroid in there to, or do i have to specifically ask for these. Some doctors do ask for a lot of information on blood tests.

After the blood tests result discussion you can ask your doctor for specific tests if you need more blood information.

Also has the blood test got to be fasting.

IF NECESSARY

I have asked about all you mention including Triglycerides, doctor said the FT4 & FT3 should be in, but if not, Mom will have to go to the hospital for the blood .

I will ask for a print out definitely.

Sorry I've not been able to reply. I've been trying a different herbal, I guess, called Guggul which is also supposed to regulate the HDL, LDL, and Trigliscerides. I've not had a blood test yet so can't say if it works or not. When I get the test done I'll let you know.
