Does anyone know if taking Simvastatin for possible genetic high cholesterol actually does any good?
Also has anyone noticed weight gain or hunger?
Thanks

Why are you taking statin? What are your cholesterol numbers?
Hi. I have Familial Hyperlipidaemia - aka Genetic High Cholesterol.
I started off on Simvastatin, worked up to the max dose, moved to Atorvastatin then to max Rosuvastatin. Each decreased my cholesterol levels, as did adding in Ezetimibe.
Weight gain, hunger increase - no. If anything. slight weight loss over the 25 years I've been on statins, but I wouldn't attribute one to the other.
Having developed angina at the age of 29, I can assure you that statins have worked for me with no side effects. Had I not been on them, I would not be alive to type this. Even a few slight side effects would be better than death.
Yes weight gain is just one of many side-effects of statins. Should you take them? With Familial Hypercholesterolemia (if this is what you have) that would depend on age. Younger yes, older no - the increased significance of the high cholesterol drops with age and actually extends life expectancy the older you get. There is at least one member of this support group, with an elderly and fit father, who inherited it and refuses to take statins but the choice is very much up to you.
