I am currently receiving UniversalCredit and would like to know if I can claim for carers allowance for looking after my mother and her husband? How do I go about getting help in this matter?

Thanks all, K.

Hi I would just submit a claim but you can only get carer payment for one person who is sick and in receipt on sickness state benefit.

Hi kendo6, I would try Gov.uk which gives all the information regarding carers Allowance. I wish you well. Xxxx

Hi Kendo64,

I'm so sorry that I can't really answer your question, but I see you have just joined the Care Community, so wanted to say 'hello and welcome' to you. I see you've had a couple of replies already so I hope they will help you. JeffAjaxSmith's advice to just submit a claim is probably a good plan. At least that's going to the heart of the matter, but you do need to know all the rules surrounding this benefit, in case you should have any claim rejected, because you'd want to know why, and probably how you could appeal that.

Sassy59 is also quite right that the GovUK has a whole section dedicated to Carers' Allowance and even provides for you to make a claim online, or to download and print off your forms to claim by post.

Also of wonderful help is Citizens' Advice if you are in doubt about anything to do with this benefit. If you call your nearest branch, they can offer help and advice too.

Very best wishes, and do let us know how you get on.

Hi It sounds like you are having a lot to do on the caring front at the moment. The best way to find out what you can claim for is The Dept of Work & Pensions, they know the rule book off pat and will be able to tell you, there may even be some other benefits you can claim or the people you are caring for. such as attendance allowance or PIP. If you don't ask you won't get, please try them. Also try your local paliative care team they may be able to assist or tell you what you should do.
