My 96 year old mother lives on her own and we ( three 65+children )visit at least once a day. Her short term memory is now very poor but she insists she wats well and is able to shower. W e are very sure that neither of these are true but we don't know what to do next. She is very independent!

I had this with my mother, now 100! Contact Adult Social Services and have a chat with them, they can advise you, this is a common problem. With food, is it possible that you could visit at mealtimes and make sure you see her eating at least one meal a day?

Hey, have you thought about any technological solutions? Do I understand correctly that you basically want to verify that she is performing the activities of daily living? What would she say about a camera, like a Nest Cam or something if you were to install it in her home?

My grandmother remained independent until she was 100 on a diet of bread and cheese. Most food went straight through her to be honest, especially fruit and veg. But she came home to us at weekends and ate with the family. Perhaps you could have a meal with her once or twice a week when you visit, then at least you would know she was having a good home cooked meal or even a take away and she would enjoy the company?

My 88 year old mum has a friend who brings in fish and chips once a week or will cook a light meal, while he has a glass of wine she has a cup of tea. She really enjoys those visits.
