I have recently had a LFT . The result was my ALT was 142. I was horrified. I had been prescribed three courses of antibiotics, Nitrofurantoin and Cefalexin for a UTI and finished the course the day before my blood test. Could this elevation in ALT be due to the antibiotics?

elevated alt antibiotics

Hi there. I think probably you need to check with your GP whether the antibiotics are having affect on your results but any infection will also affect them. My husband's results had been improving until he developed a UTI. He was told that his liver results had worsened because the liver was struggling to fight the infection. He had several courses of antibiotics and they have improved slightly now. I hope you feel better soon.
Fighting an infection of any kind can elevate your liver numbers.
Long term nitrofurantoin (i.e. as a preventative rather than treatment) has also been identified as a known trigger of auto immune hepatitis.
I can't figure out from your profile or previous posts whether or not you already have an identified liver issue.
Normal course of action with a single set of elevated liver enzymes would be to repeat the test a few weeks down the line to see if this is a 'blip' or a pattern of elevation.
