I’ve been going to QEHB for a few years, but my consultant has suggested that I might be better off transferring to King’s in London. He thinks it’s closer to home, but with London traffic, the travel time might end up being similar.
Also, they have changed the way they see patients from now on before you were able to ask to see your regular consultant/Prof but now you don’t have a choice
Does anyone have any advice, experience, or recommendations? I’d really appreciate any insights.
Thanks!

Where are you. I am in a similar situation. Driving /parking is rubbish near King's, forget.
I am 40 miles west and use our superb NHS patient transport. Book at least 2 weeks in advance.. Emergencies however, will require taxi or neighbour drop off if you're lucky.
Hello Hope, we used kings. We all ways had a positive experience there. We used the train, most of the time. Denmark Hill is about a 10-15 min walk from the hospital. The parking isn't good, as has been said. We also used a taxi and somtimes the bus service 176 from charing Cross it takes about 40mins and costs under £2 if you have a later appointment.
We didn't have a blue badge, so can't help you there. There are a few blue badge spots around if I remember but there is virtually no car parking on site, that I can recall. Just drop off zones. But as a blue badge holder you might qualify for their patient transport service. we didn't, so relied on public transport. Perhaps give them a call and ask?
Oh, and it falls out ofthe ULEZ area , but be careful which route you take as its close to it.
I was at QEHB for six years. I was never given a choice as to which consultant I saw so you have been very lucky indeed if you have been given that choice. That said I got through a successful Transplant and two follow up operations at the QEHB.
Yes, I was very lucky because the person I was seeing always asked me to check in at the reception for him. He knew my situation well—I have a complex medical history and severe side effects from multiple medications. He was the lead there, and I always saw him.
Now, they’ve made some changes. To be honest, he was the main reason I was willing to travel two hours each way by car. He actually suggested King’s and has mentioned before that it’s probably closer to me.
That’s great “service” Hope! Have you seen any of the other Consultants yet? I found - like in all occupations- there were the very good and others who seemed to be not quite so (I don’t really mean that but I’m sure you can get the gist!). Fantastic overall though and I’m still here 6 years on post TP 😀👍.
Maybe you could see how you get on with the new system at QEHB before making the switch to Kings?
Yes, I did see others a couple of times, but I wasn’t very impressed with the outcome. Both times were a letdown. It’s not that I became accustomed to a specific person, but I genuinely suffered from the advice and treatment I received. I even got an apology for it, but I probably have trust issues now. I’m not suggesting this is the case for everyone—I’m sure there are very competent professionals—but I’m just sharing my experience. probably just my bad luck!
