Hi,

I have been asked for a repeat blood test in 6 weeks due to liver function - do I need to worry ?

Anyone else had this ? what was the outcome ?

Many Thanks

A number of factors including temporary viruses can cause liver function tests to blip up temporarily. If you feel fine repeating the tests in 6 weeks sounds like a reasonable idea. Mine blipped a couple times for reasons like that and returned to normal in less than a week but the 6 weeks sounds like a good chance to be sure everything is back to normal. In the meantime if you are concerned you can do things that are liver friendly like not drink alcohol, eat a Mediterranean diet and get out for walks.

Thanks for the reply and yes hopefully it’s an anomaly - just to be more specific the level that’s elevated is GGT at 119

I immediately changed my diet to a low fat low calorie one and my liver function was normal in the next blood test

Many years ago, (about in 1998) my gp kept asking for repeat LFT tests, then saw liver specialist who said I had fatty liver...was never a drinker...Dec 2018, had gastric bleed... Seot 2022 had a liver transplant. So it MAY but MAY not indicate you have a problem developing with liver.. but as other have said, it may just be a blip. Don't panic...

I have bloods every 2 months t monitor things outside of the clinic at Kings, arranged by my GP. My GP used to phone me if the LFT results were abnormal so I could discuss it with my gastro team when I was still having treatment for my IBD. Now they are available on the NHS app, I can see them myself and contact relevant teams if I have any concern.

It is quite normal to have repeated tests if there are abnormalities. They are just checking if it is a 'blip' or if it is a worsening of your condition. Sometimes certain over the counter medications/herbal remedies, drinks or minor infections can cause a change. Hopefully the follow up will show things going back to where they were (normal for you, even if it is abnormal).

If they panicked every time one of my results changed I would end up living in hospital!
