In compensated cirrhosis, when the liver is still performing its functions, a moderate amount of protein may be safe. However, if cirrhosis leads to liver failure, especially in combination with hepatic encephalopathy, and hi level of ammonia in the blood excessive protein intake may be undesirable. Protein powders containing plant-based or easily digestible dairy proteins (such as whey) may be preferable to animal proteins in such cases. Protein may be necessary to maintain muscle mass and the general condition of the patient with cirrhosis. It is best way to consult with a doctor who is familiar with medical history and can recommend an individualized diet. Hope other forum participants will be able to write about their own individual experiences.

Dear livinglif123
We suggest talking this through with your own doctor or health care professional in the first instance and always check with your doctor or registered dietitian before taking any kind of supplement.

Hi, last time I saw my consultant he said the muscles in my face looked different & that I need to have more protein. I didn't ask if it had to be just by more food or powder etc. I have tried to up my protein in food & I'm due to see him on 6th Feb so I'm going to ask. x
