Could there still be high levels of protein in urine?

Hi. I just need some advice on this issue as I have been having some problems.

I have been having problems with frothy urine over this last week. This could be the sign of many things but can also be the sign of protein in your urine which may mean damage or some other kind of problem. I have been having some problems with my urinary tract on the right side (as that is where the pain is on and off) it is not a uti as well.

I have gone to the clinic to have this checked but have not been able to urinate for a fresh sample three times now which has really frustrated me. My doctor told me to bring one from home. So today I did in the morning however by the time I had seen the doctor it was early afternoon so my urine had been sitting at room temp for three and half hours! When my doctor had tested it he said everything was normal.

My question is can protein in your urine increase or decrease at room temp. Because if so would that not give a false result?

I want to go back tomorrow and have this checked as I had urinated when I had gotten home and it was still frothy. Any advice on this would help alot.

Urine protein concentrations can actually increase if stored at room temperature. This is why if you are asked to do a 24 hour collection you are asked to store it in the fridge. I do though agree that a fresh sample is probably still best even if its not essential.

As you say, there are many things that can cause your urine to be frothy/foamy besides proteinuria, including concentrated urine from being a bit dehydrated. This can especially manifest itself in the morning after a good nights sleep. After all, how often do we usually go without a drink for 6 - 8 hours?

Hope the answer you seek is as straight forward as that. Either way, i hope you get it soon. I know how frustrating not having a firm diagnosis can be.

Thank you for this. I was confused whether it increased or decreased. I'll still try go to my GP to do a fresh urine sample. Hopefully I'll be able to produce that. Again thank you.

The 24 hour test is the way to go, the best urine sample you can give is directly from when you wake up in the morning. As it isn't deluded by water intake and its been sitting for a while.

Hi is that so? I'll ask my doc about the 24 hour one. Thank you.

Just be aware it is quite rare for the 24 hr test to be done these days. In most cases it isn't really necessary.
