ventilator and medically induced coma - H.E/Liver

hi all,

My dad was admitted to hospital on Friday with a chest infection and flu, his oxygen saturation was 90% and considered a medical emergency. Once admitted they put him on antibiotics and stopped his liver medication. On Sunday his oxygen saturation went to 17% and they put him in a medically induced coma and on a ventilator. Each day they are reducing oxygen as he is producing more of his own which is good. They also stopped his antibiotics yesterday so I assume the infection has gone. My question is, does it sound right to you that they are not giving him all of his liver meds? I’m due to speak to the consultant about it but I’m concerned that it’s more a lack of care on their part as they aren’t a liver specialist hospital, they deal with acute emergencies, so think they could be making a mistake with not giving him his liver and HE meds. Anyone been through similar and know if this is standard protocol?

I was forced off my Hep C drugs when I had pneumonia. Apparently one of the antibiotics I needed did not play nicely with the antivirals. I kicked up a fuss and the hospital rang my liver consultant to discuss. The liver consultant confirmed that in my condition stopping the Hep C drugs to allow me to have the antibiotic was the lesser of two evils. If you don't get a sensible answer from your husband's consultant then ask them to ring his liver team.

I sadly went through the same thing. I was so ill but can’t remember any of it but my parents were told to come and see me before they put me into a coma because they didn't think I would wake up. But obviously I did, but I did spend 6 1/2 weeks in hospital. I can’t remember six weeks of so I don’t actually know if they were still giving me medication. I assume they were. Good luck..

Hi Lilu all I can say is when I was admitted to ICU with a problem with my bile duct they took me off all my medication, but really it’s a question for the consultant no one else. I wish you and your dad all the best wishes from the wife and I 💕💕.

Stay safe All
