Partner has deteriorated

I’m absolutely devastated. My partner was doing so well last week, to the point of that he may be discharged this week. My partner has deteriorated to a degree that he is now on oxygen as his levels were so low. His ascities is yet to be drained and he is on antibiotics for an infection. The hospital have said they may move him to high dependency ward, which they nearly did last night, as he is so unwell. His bilirubin levels have gone up by 20 to 240. They said that he is alert, knows what is going on and able to talk. I’m heartbroken and going through despair. I’m praying at every opportunity I get but can’t get the feeling of absolute dread out of my mind. I’m so scared of losing him. The consultant said to be optimistic but realistic and they will do all they can 😢😢😢😢

My heart goes out to you, especially as he is going through this at such an awful time & you can't be with him. Try and stay positive although I can imagine how hard that is, he is in the best hands. Sending positive vibes too

We are sorry to read that your husband remains poorly. Please do call the nurse helpline again if needed.

Warm wishes.

Please try to stay positive. Keep asking about draining the ascites, it took alot of nagging for my brother to be successfully drained and he turned a corner after the procedure. Also is your partner eating? Nutrition is key with cirrhosis, my brother had a NG tube fitted, which again I saw as a pivotal moment in his treatment and we went from 20% chance of survival to home. Please don't give up hope and continue to ask the Drs/do research. I had a notebook and used to question the drs each day, making notes and generally being an annoying sister, but I was determined to do everything possible to save my brother even when they drs said it was just a matter of time. Thankfully to anyone that was listening, my prayers were answered and my brother can home. We're 11 months down the line now and he's doing well. Please don't give up hope ♥️

I agree with everything Artemis has said! The ascites drain will really help make him more comfortable! Each litre they drain is approximately a kg! This illness is like being on a rollercoaster, but do write things down, ask questions and learn as much as you can! Often when I was ill and in hospital staff would turn up to do things ie take me for a CT! I wouldn’t know why? or an x ray or a new drug! So I always politely said No! It until someone came and discussed it with me! Once they did that was fine!

He is in the right place and it sounds like he has a really good team looking after him🙏

Sorry if I went on a bit, but I have been through similar in the last 2 years so I base my answers on my experience .

My partner is being transferred to intensive care as he is struggling to breath and with the amount of fluid in his body it’s classed as multiple organ failure. I’m absolutely distraught!! I’m praying constantly

It must be an awful time for you both but its not the end. I can only speak from my own experience but when i was admitted, aged 47, i was in a similar position. Bileribium was off the scale, 400 at one point, i had swollen legs. Stomach and could not walk far at all, horrible nose bleeds etc. II was in hospital for 5 weeks and when i came out my wife became my carer, bathed me, walked me etc etc, i was and still am on diuretics but have my kidney function monitored. I would say for 6 months i was on the brink of life / death, my consultant told me at one point i was unlikely to last the week and i had numerous trips in the ambulance back to hospital. I was classified as child pugh c which i think gives you around a year. Now we are 3 years on, I'm 100% a different person, active, out and about all the time walking, swimming etc etc. It really is possible to come back from what looks like the end to a new beginning. Yes i have cirrhosis but i try not to let that stop me doing anything, like i said though, its taken 3 years to get to this point. Its not an overnight thing. I am sure you have been told a 1000 times but no drink at all, and if poss a good diet (i struggle with sweet stuff as have a very sweet tooth) ... just take baby steps, i didn't start eating properly until probably around 3 months in, i was just sick all the time, next thing you know I've the appetite of a horse and am always hungry.

Let me know how your hubby gets on and when he's up to it maybe ask him to pop me a message. I will help from a "I've been though it so understand" point of view.

Take care

Chris

My partner is on a ventilator as he was struggling so much to breathe on 100% oxygen. The consultant was not overly confident that my partner can pull through With liver failure, kidney failure, pneumonia, diabetes and an infection, even though they are doing everything they can. My partner has been stable overnight and they have reduced the oxygen to 55%. I’m constantly worried sick and I’m praying so much. This is a nightmare and I’m not coping very well 😢😢😢

Previous posts eloquently presented, say everything I possibly could so I won’t regurgitate.

My heart felt sympathy. It’s really important that you don’t forget to look after yourself. Eat, sleep (even if it’s just cat naps), but it will help you stay physically & mentally strong.

Stay safe and know that you have very, very many of us on here thinking about you.
