BBC Panorama - “Binge Drinking and Me” missed it?

Back on the 25th of November 2024, the BBC Panorama television series broadcasted a program entitled, “Binge Drinking and Me”.

“Alcohol-related deaths from liver disease among women under 40 have risen sharply over the last decade – but why? Thirty-two-year-old BBC journalist Hazel Martin goes on a personal journey to find the answer. She is one of a growing number of young women who have experienced alcohol-related liver damage, despite not regarding herself as being dependent on alcohol. Talking to doctors, patients and experts on the drinks industry, Hazel discovers that a key cause is Britain’s binge-drinking culture and explores what can be done about it.”

I felt that this program was too important not to miss for many people.

For those who may have missed it, and would still like to watch it, it can be viewed on BBC I-Player at: healthunlocked.com/redirect...

Because I felt that this episode was too important a message, I’ve also added a copy to “YouTube”: youtu.be/0G3czDy13yQ?si=TTU...

which hopefully may be helpful to those people who are outside of the UK and don’t have access to BBC programs.

A Merry Christmas to One and All.

I found it to be misleading. The reporter had just had a child and, I assume 9 months of no Alcohol. For her to get, Hepatitis, as her blood showed, either she was downing huge amounts, or there was another cause of the inflammation. It was also stated alcohol "was the most likely" cause, so there was some doubt for some reason.

They gave 12kpa as the cut-off for Cirrhosis, which is not true for Alcohol damage. F3 is 19.1kpa, so she was pretty far away from F4 (Cirrhosis). She quickly went under 5kpa, which led me to think the original score was unreliable due to the inflammation she had present. There are papers on the Fibroscan over estimating Fibrosis with inflammation present.

In the 1960s, it showed 36 women a year died of Liver Disease, and then in 2022, 356 deaths, overall that is still a very small number of drinkers out of millions!

We do need more information on Alcohol, but we need the truth; this one just doesn't quite add up for me.

Hi Richard, yes i watched this documentary that was on for 30 mins . Was suprised at how low her kpa was at the end .. mine will never get that low but then I considered myself an awful lot worse than Hazel was to start with

Anyway wishing you and yours a very blessed Christmas Richard 🎄
