Unknown Liver Disease or from Alcohol?

Hi

About 8 weeks I had two alcohol binge sessions over the weekend on an empty stomach. (I only drink 3-4 times a year). Following this, about 4 days after, I started developing hot and cold flushes, sweating, hives and pruritus - especially on my stomach, poor wound healing. Pale colored stools. My AST - 40. ALT - 33. Negative for viral hepatitis.

I spoke to my GP and he said it's impossible to develop liver injury from two alcohol binge sessions, yet here I am and have these symptoms. This only happened after drinking on an empty stomach. Can binge drinking on an empty stomach cause liver injury as the alcohol is absorbed much quicker ?

Could my liver just be more susceptible to alcohol?

Anyone else experience similar symptoms or after drinking alcohol

The symptoms you describe arn't 100% conclusively indicative of any sort of liver disease at all. Yes you'd want them checked out as to why you have these symptoms but they alone wouldn't flag as liver damage. Your blood inflammation markers also don't indicate liver damage - to be experiencing the symptoms you are and for it to be liver related you'd expect your liver bloods to be somewhat deranged.

Thank you for your reply.

Anything that could cause pale stools after binge drinking alcohol?

I read that pale stools are indicative of some kind of damage related to the liver.

Pale stools in relation to liver disease are due to issues with the biliary system so you'd expect changes to your bilirubin blood levels.

Oh okay. So bilirubin should be above normal range?

As I said you do want these symptoms exploring and explaining but don't necessary plump for them being liver related. Gall stones can cause pale stool and itching as can other things. Your body doesn't seem to have enjoyed the binge drinking episodes so perhaps quit before damage is done.

First time this has happened. Only difference was I drank on an empty stomach.

I highly doubt you will have done any liver damage after a bout of binge drinking on an empty stomach, the other issues could be down to diet, medication, stress or a whole host of other issues. It’s good you’re being proactive regarding your health and it’s always wise to follow up any issues you may have even if they prove to be nothing, which I hope is the case for you, good luck.
