BBC News Story, 'My mum was an alcoholic and it was a massive secret'

While I fully understand that this site isn’t an alcohol forum, alcohol has had an impact upon so many peoples lives, and this site is about support and hopefully raising awareness with others. So please forgive me as this post isn’t directly liver-related.

What is often forgotten is the impact alcohol-abuse can have on so many peoples lives. There is a news story today on the BBC News Website entitled, 'My mum was an alcoholic and it was a massive secret': bbc.co.uk/news/stories-5600...

This is a campaign being run by NACOA (National Association for Children of Alcoholics), they have called it, “Children of Alcoholics Week” (COA Week)” Most people who know me will know that I personally hate the word, “Alcoholic” as this is just a horrible word that labels someone. Besides, a person can have a serious alcohol problem but not be addicted. So these people can then all to often fall through the cracks, because they can say, “I don’t need to drink every day, so I’m not an alcoholic and therefore this doesn’t apply to me, I’m alright.

This campaign is being run right now yet this is the first time I have heard about it mentioned. It’s run from the 14th to the 20th: coa.nacoa.org.uk/

Both Laura and I have been members of NACOA for some time now and would like to let people know that if they have any children at home who may require someone to talk to, then NACOA is always there 24/7.

Hi Laura, I spoke to him yesterday and he wished me a happy birthday despite it not being our actual birthday for 2 weeks. Unfortunately they found an infection after completing a stool sample because he had elevated fever so he’s on antibiotics. He’s working closely with the neurosurgeon now as they found brain damage following a scan. He forgets where he’s at, believes myself and our little brother r outside his hospital room waiting to come in. He thought he was at the grocery store a few days ago and needs daily reminders about where he’s at, the fact he got a liver transplant... docs needed to run more testing because nurses continually find him talking to himself in his room. Really sad to see how it’s played out but I’m just glad he’s under the care of great docs. I tried calling him today but no luck so I’ll try again tomorrow. Thanks for checking in.

It's heartening to know he is in good hands and receiving great care. Hoping you will get some much needed better news very soon. Stay positive x

All well here thanks G 👍

Couldn't read it all ... too harrowing. But it has to be read by those parents whose drinking has increased especially during lockdown. There's more to consider than just what they want to chuck down their throats.
