Hi so back in March I had bloods and Xray taken because for months I was feeling breathless and couldn't stay awake. All came back underactive thyroid. BUT something showed in liver. I was monitored by GP then August my enzymes worryingly high. Had full liver bloods and ultrasound. Came back NAFLD. GP only advised cut down or out sugar, salt and saturated fat. I'm not overweight size 12, I don't drink and have never smoked. Can anybody advise me what I can and cannot eat please? I check traffic lights on all food now.

Hi there and welcome to the forum.
The British Liver Trust has a page dedicated to Non Alcohol Related Fatty Liver Disease / newly renamed Metabolic Disfunction - Associated Steatoic Liver Disease (MASLD) at :- britishlivertrust.org.uk/in...
Your thyroid issue is probably the reason for this despite you being of a healthy size and weight.
The BLT also has a downloadable leaflet (or you can order it in paper form) all about treating NAFLD with healthy diet and exercise and you can find this at :- britishlivertrust.org.uk/do...
Best wishes,
Katie
Hi,
I would ask your Gp to be referred to a dietitian for really useful and accurate advice about what is best suited to you, your likes and dislikes and your lifestyle . Similar to you I’m a non drinker/non smoker with normal bmi. NAFLD was one of the possibilities as to the cause of my cirrhosis, but nothing definitive.
Hello, a dietician would really help. But in the mean time a Mediterranean diet is the best thing. Also coffee is recommended ( not to milky). But this might also help, i cant give medical advice but my mum takes levothyroxine for her underactive thyroid and it causes raised cholesterol and liver enzymes. This was pointed out to her by the pharmacist who works at the gp surgery and not her gp. Perhaps a word with your gp about the medication you're on ? Just in case.
Thank you. I've heard levothyroxine can cause raised enzymes. My GP was so dismissive on phone. Do this not once when I asked is it related to my meds did he say yes, or could be. Just change your diet.
Hi, sorry to hear you’ve been having a hard time. Hopefully thyroxine will make you feel a lot better. It can take a while to get the right dose.
Re NAFLD, that seems to be the standard diagnosis for anyone with raised liver enzymes who doesn’t drink. You’re right to ask about diet, it can tackle the fatty liver. However it might be worth asking if it could be an autoimmune liver disease. I suggest this because of your thyroid. If you have one autoimmune condition, you are more likely to have another. They may already have considered this and ruled it out, but it’s worth asking because treatment can slow the progression of disease and make you feel better. I have both as do lots of others on here. You’re not alone.
