My partner had his ascites drained last week. He has had 2 previous drains but this time he has experienced a lot of pain afterwards. It’s sometimes quite acute - and gets worse when he eats. Then he feels 100% better - only for the pain to start again.
Has anyone else had this experience? Any advice out there? I want to call the hospital but he doesn’t…..

hi - my son has been having weekly drains for almost two years . He has a lot of pain afterwards - he says it’s like having cramp in his side and stomach . He has to go to bed afterwards and can’t eat anything until the pain eases . He’s been told this is normal after removing so much fluid - he was having upto 12 litres drained . How much does your partner get drained ? Hope this helps .
My sons has had a TIPS procedure and he takes water tablets now - he still needs drains every two weeks usually 5-6 litres and he is still in pain afterwards .
My partner has only had about 4 litres drained and has been in pain on and off for days. If he eats it gets worse. I think I should probably call the hospital but he is reluctant…..
He’s quite reassured that there’s someone else out there with similar pain though.
I get drained every week 5-7 liters. I’ve had the pain as well. I think it’s the organs finding a way back to their proper spots. I bought a post pregnancy abdominal wrap. That I wear for about 24 hours after the drain. It seems to help. Good luck with your journey.
