I have kidney/liver disease. I'm dealing with esophageal varices amoung other problems caused by the liver disease. I HAVE AN URGENT QUESTION--- I've had esophageal varices banding done countless times in the past 3yrs. I had some varices rupture three days ago and of course had to be admitted. I received the usual 3 units of blood and afterwards the next day I had the EGD done to band the varices. There were four varices that had to be banded. Now like I said I've had this procedure done many times before, I've had some discomfort a few times but NOTHING LIKE THIS!! This is scary and so painful!! It feels like my chest is on fire and there's a constant severe pain. The pain is made worse by swallowing. I've not eaten anything at all and drank very little, it hurts so bad. The procedure was done around 8-9 this morning and it's now after 10 tonight and the pain has not eased up any at all. This has never happened before. Can someone please tell me what this is and what I should do!?!?!? This is very painful😭 HELP

Severe pain after esophageal varices banding
You should contact the endoscopy department who carried out your procedure, pain on eating following banding is normal (hubby was sometimes 8 days before he was pain free either eating or drinking), HOWEVER, the pain you are describing/experiencing sounds out of the ordinary and needs following up.
I know one chap who used to post had extraordinary pain when the gasses they fill you up with had failed to leave his system and there can also be problems with strictures forming.
Don't leave it, get checked out.

Hi,
Please consider going straight into your nearest accident and emergency department at hospital and seeing the doctors there.
It is important that they assess you as soon as possible,
Best wishes,

You need to let someone know ASAP. This does not sound normal. I've had banding countless times & never experienced this!!
Yes, best to get it investigated, could be the air or inflamatiion.. Like Katies husband I always have a problem eating for around 8-10 days after a banding..its usually only possible to eat mashed up food and soups . I experience pain when the food is stuck in gullet which is horrible but no pain like you describe.
I'd go to the nearest A&E straight away and put a call into your consultant. There's no blood in your urine or bowels, right? Any vomiting?
It may be you are just very sensitive and/or the stitching was done too tightly.
But good luck!

hello, my girlfriend has severe pain and its been 3 days since surgery and she is in intolerable pain. should we go back to the doctor?
Was this after an endoscopy and banding jlee525? When you say intolerable pain is it constant or just when eating? If it is constant and she is in a lot of pain then yes you should either contact the unit who did the procedure or go to GP/hospital for their opinion.

Yes, it was after an endoscopy and banding, she hasn't eaten anything since the procedure 3 days ago because she says it hurts like someone is stabbing her in the esophagus when she eats. I believe she is in pain even without eating because she's been mentioning pain when she wakes up but it may just be from the gasses they pumped into her. She says its sharp pains that come and go but theres always serious pain when she eats. She sees Dr. Galati at Houston Methodist and we live in Louisiana, if its seems like something to be worried about we will head there soon.
Thank you so much!

Pain on eating is absolutely normal after banding, the longest it took my hubby to eat normally after banding was about 8 days - he had numerous procedures and 42 bands over two years. Even taking sips of water hurt like mad as the food/fluid passes the site of the banding, it does ease.
Has she been passing wind after the procedure? It is pretty normal as those gases they pump in need to come out, some people report issues if they don't release the gas.
If she is at all considered then it would be worth you recontacting her doctor.

This is quite normal, inhad it on my last banding. Lasted for 10 days. Not nice..some people have it everytime this was my 4th scope and never had it before it will pass. Try cold soup
