Elevated liver enzymes but no cause?

Hello, just wondering if anybody else has elevated liver enzymes but no cause found?

ALT and AST have been raised for months but doctors can’t find a cause. I’ve had SO many tests, scans etc, and everything is normal? Yet they keep coming back raised.

I take 1.25mg bisoprolol but doctors are certain it’s not that at such a small dose. I’m also 4 months post partum.

It’s just very frustrating not knowing why. They have always been normal.

Hi, sorry to hear you're going through this. Do you have any symptoms with this or just the high liver enzymes ? Only asking as I've been under investigation for 4 years and the first sign was my liver enzymes being raised, like you had numerous scans etc even a liver biopsy and no specific cause with the liver but they now believe I have an autoimmune condition so just wondering if you have any accompanying symptoms. Hope you feel ok.

I have some very strange altered skin sensations. Pins and needles, tingling, cold water droplets feelings. Very odd! Seen a neurologist but again, everything is normal. Which autoimmune condition are they thinking? I’m wondering if I have one too! Do you have any symptoms?

That is strange isn't it. Yes I have a lot of symptoms unfortunately, glad everything is OK with the neurologist. I would definitely suggest trying to keep a diary of all the symptoms you are having to see if anything adds up. With me they've confirmed it's a connective tissue disease just unsure if it's lupus or bechets and they believe this is why my liver enzymes are constantly high unless on steroids.

Hope you manage to get some answers 🤞🏻

Oh interesting. I hope you get a definite answer soon. Lupus was mentioned at one point but then never heard anything about it again. Can I ask how raised your levels are?

Thank you, if you have other symptoms alongside the liver enzymes in the blood its worth bringing back up again as things aren't always obvious. The recent ones I've had I think we're alt 101 and alkaline phosphatase was 275 if I'm correct however they do go higher again depending on if its being maintained with medication or not.

Been happening to me for 15+ years, it’s ALP and GGT that go up and down for me, had all the tests and biopsy but nothing definite found.

Oh how strange!! Do you have symptoms? I guess if it’s been going on for years and no adverse problems, it could just be our bodies ‘normal’.

Mine have been elevated (around the 100 mark for both ALT and AST) ever since I started getting regular MOTs about 5 years ago. Doctor not worried. I started getting symptoms a couple of years ago. Gallstones were discovered and gallbladder removed. They expected readings to go down but they did not. Started getting vicious fatigue and nausea a year ago, along with random pains in my right side, and got tested in earnest, including ultrasound and MRI, but nothing. Eventually got tested for Hep C (plus other Hepatitis variants, including autoimmune) to rule all of that out, and discovered it was, in fact, Hep C. Probably lying dormant since the 70s or 80s from some medical or dental procedure. If you've not had the full liver blood screen to include Hepatitis variants that might be something to look at.

Oh wow!!! Glad you finally found the cause and hopefully able to treat it. I have had the hepatitis screening and all were negative.

Hi Gingernut64 I had this issue post partum and when they investigated they found I had post partum thyroiditis. As the thyroid came back to normal, so did my liver enzymes. They tested every couple of months for a year or so and you could see how the levels gradually came down as my thyroid got back to normal. Sounds like you’ve had thorough tests though so guessing they’ve checked your thyroid as part of that! I hope you get an answer soon, and get sorted!

thank you for this reply! One of my doctors did say she thinks it’s related to post partum as nothing else seemed to match up and put it down as ‘one of those things’. My thyroid is normal but you never know, hormones can do strange things! Has it completely settled now?

Absolutely! So many changes when you have a baby it’s crazy isn’t it. And yes it’s been fine since. I did have right upper quadrant pain for approx 3 years afterwards but the bloods were always normal since my thyroid got back to how it should be. As a result of that I went for scans - ultrasound and CT (sorry wrote MRI in original response !) and they said all fine. They actually put the right upper quadrant pain down to my IBS which I’ve had for years. Think that just got exacerbated after having my daughter too !

I just joined this forum (and posted on a sudden chenge in AST tomALT ratio. I have had elevated liver enzymes for decades. aLT and AST usually 1-5-3 times upper limitbof normal. ALP usually normal unless i am sick like a respiratory infection GGT elevated almost always, more than alt and adt. sensitive market

No cause has been found but i don have a connective tissue disease. (And a liver hemangioma) Curious how the responder meho mentioned bechete got a disgnosis since i am finding doctors refuse tonpsy any attention to my concrrn sbout possible bechete Ive also entertained that this iscall a marker of a higher than usual burden of xenobiotic/toxins that my body is dealing with. Ie not liver damage perse but up regulated levels of alt and adt and ggt

Anyway since yours started postpartem that seems to be a huge clue. Hope you get answers soon or it just goes away
