Around 4 months ago my family had a life insurance company come and take blood. My levels came back elevated.
Mainly my ALT 127 / AST 52
I immediately went on a strict diet. Lost around 25 pounds. Feeling great! I now have issues with consistent yellow stool. My stomach is constantly growling and I have a lot of gas.
I went to the doctors blood came back elevated again. This time the AST 90 / ALT 37. Bilirubin 1.2. So my numbers flipped.
The only problems I have is just the yellow stool about a month now. I have No pain in my stomach / liver area. No other symptoms.
I noticed once I went on my diet and lost the weight the yellow stools started. I’m also super stressed out (corona virus isn’t helping at all!) i’m constantly looking up things online.
Just a couple questions I have maybe someone can help?
- Can a fatty liver cause yellow stools?
- can stress cause bowel problems?
- can excessive weight loss cause damage to my liver?
I have more labs scheduled and a follow up with my doc. Will post the results once Get the labs done.
Thank you for viewing my post!
Any feedback will help.

Eggs, chicken, Fish, turkey, veggies, I’ve also been eating a lot of probiotic low fat yogurts.
Rapid weight loss can make NAFLD worse and stress can cause bowel problems. Gas can result from a diet too high in fibre but that doesn't appear to be the case with your diet. If anything you could probably do with more fibre in your diet. I drink a milkshake daily & use it to wash down 7 or 8 heaped tablespoons of wheat bran to make sure I get enough fibre & it causes no problems and helps to make me regular. I'd stop the probiotic low fat yoghurts to see if the gas problem clears up. I'd also experiment by reducing the amount of meat you consume & increase the amount of vegetables & add a little fruit. I eat several oranges daily & sometimes apples & have no digestion problems. The ALT coming down to normal is a good sign but the AST remaining raised is a worry. AST is found in other organs besides the liver while raised ALT normally results from the liver being inflamed. Try experimenting with diet & give your body more time to settle down.
Sounds good! Thank you for your help I really appreciate it.
Hi and welcome to the forum,
Are you in the UK? You may want to consider requesting an imaging scan such as an ultrasound scan to get more clinical information and aid towards a possible diagnosis.
If you are found to have NAFLD on the scan you could then discuss fibrosis testing. Good luck and keep us posted.
Hopefully you have your phone consultation soon. Although not qualified in any way a quick check on internet for 'Hepatitis A IGG reactive' - comes up with the following:-
Reactive basically means positive. If you were vaccinated for Hep A, the total Ab will be reactive, so that is good. If you were ever exposed to Hep A, it will also be reactive. You need the IgM and symptoms to see if it's a recent infection. IgG indicates prior infection and helps you resist a new infection.
The British Liver Trust has a page all about Hep A which is usually a short lived infection. britishlivertrust.org.uk/in...
