I have autoimmune hepatitis cirrhosis and take azathioprine. I am going to Indonesia in June. Is it possible for me to take malaria tablets with my condition?

Hello

This is a question that your own health care professional is best placed to answer, as only they have access to your medical records.

We suggest talking this through with your own doctor or health care professional in the first instance or if you [are in the UK and] would find it useful to talk things over, our nurse-led helpline is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 3pm on 0800 652 7330 (excluding bank holidays)

Best wishes

hi

If I were you I’d ring your liver nurse and ask him/her to speak to your consultant.

I’m definitely not medically trained in anyway at all but just thinking that weighing up the risks the tablets would i assume better for your liver than catching malaria itself which can be fatal to the healthy. But considering mult your own medical professionals certainly.

Definitely a question to ask your own consultant/health professional. With having cirrhosis too you need to check that you are actually safe to fly especially long haul? You might need to check you haven't got any varices and make sure you have adequate health insurance to cover such a trip in light of your diagnosis.
