prescription for Arixtra (for portal vein thrombosis)

Hi my husband in on daily injections of Arixtra (self administered injections) for portal vein thrombosis. We are currently in the uK visiting relatives and due to familyl reasons will have to extend our stay, which means he will run out of the supply we took with us (we are resident in Italy and that is where is care is)

We have registered as temporary patients in the UK (need to be here until end of January) but the doctor surgery said that this is a red drug and it cannot be dispensed by a GP, only a hospital.

Any suggestions about the best way to obtain a two week supply? Do you think it's possible to contact a hospital direct? Is it really that complicated to get an emergency supply of medicine?

Thanks in advance for any suggestion

My husband has been on a "red" drug and we had to get it prescribed by the hospital/consultant he was under each time. The only thing I can think is either to get your Consultant in Italy to fax or email it over? Or to sit at A & E and try that way?

Did the GP you asked not suggest a way of obtaining them? Maybe a high street pharmacist may be able to offer a route to getting some, you can but ask. I doubt they can get them for you but may be able to offer some guidance. Failing that a call to NHS 24 at 111.
