Gamma GT high and getting higher

After 12 years of fatty liver, diagnosed with Cirrhosis 9/22, 19.5 Fibroscan. Gave up alcohol and lost 30kg with ozempic. March fibroscan down to 12.5. Latest bloods show Gamma GT (from 75) up to 98, Platelets down to 100 (from 118), Ferritin down to 524 (from 750). LDH low at 125. Toenails mostly white. Won't see consultant until next March and GP doesn't really understand the liver kpis. I feel I am better but Gamma shooting up has spooked me. Also platelets continuing to drop, wondering is the liver disease marching on relentlessly despite the Ferritin and Fibroscan improvements.

I’m not a doctor . But don’t put too much stick in Hannah’s if everything else is looking ok. My liver unit barely uses it at all and the last time I had it tested was a year or so ago.

Part of the problem is that many GPs just don't understand serious liver issues and the bio-chemistry involved - it is complex. Having said that, it is not their job to understand it.

My GP is probably better than many, but a couple of months ago, after my routine screening, a newly qualified junior doctor called me to arrange an appointment because he was worried about my test results - I wasn't. Went to the meeting, listened to the lecture from a 26-year old and on the way out bumped into my own GP. His exact words, unprompted, were: "Before you say anything, you probably know more about it than he does. He still learning, so just give him a chance."

You should be seeing a Hepatologist every six months and having, at the very least, an Ultrasound every six months prior to seeing your Hepatologist, supplemented by blood tests, at least, every two months - I have my blood tests monthly.

If you are concerned about your GGT, I would suggest a touch more daily exercise (gentle walking, swimming or cycling, not cardio!), possibly combined with a glutathione supplement and ensuring a vit B complex supplement daily. But, I wouldn't do any of those things without taking medical advice in advance- because your condition is specific to you.

Not sure how this helps, but my GGT is up and down all over the place all the time. I would focus on the other blood test results - but, that's just me.

Hi - this is my first post on here, but I have seen a few posts about Gamma GT concerns and feel I should comment about my own experience as, back in February 2022, mine was...wait for it...2,603. Yep! Quite astounding. It is now down to 155 and, as you can imagine, this is a relief even if it is still out of range. My fibroscan score was 15.8 back then and is now 5.5 (as of 3 weeks ago). I guess I just wanted to provide some reassurance although, of course, everyone is different and I'm no medic!

when my husband was referred to hepatology his GGT was in excess of 4000 yes that’s right 4K! He was told to stop drinking and if he turned yellow then phone for an ambulance, that was in March 21. The same year in September he had a fibro scan which indicated stage 4 fibrosis. This was not tied up to his notes and things went quiet although we did speak to hepatology nurses who organised monthly blood tests as his symptoms gathered pace. Finally our own doctor called him in for a face to face appointment a year ago after another blood test, she was amazed no one had physically seen him apart from the scan. He was referred for an urgent CT which confirmed decompensated cirrhosis. From there the QE Birmingham team have been amazing and he is now coming up 5 weeks post transplant and doing so well. Speak to the hepatology nurses (help line number is on the British Liver Trust website) they can answer questions you may have and suggest a course of action. Don’t leave things to chance be proactive after all it’s your health in question, sending all the best 🙂
